Appearance

In his prime Heiter stood tall and wore glasses, his short green hair combed back save for two strands that drifted loose over his brow. His priestly garb ran black and gold: a dark robe edged in gold over a long undershirt topped in white, a gold belt at the waist, and a collar of black and gold above dark trousers and shoes. Elevation to bishop swapped the black for white, adding a shoulder cape and a floor-length under-robe still cinched by the same gold belt. Age lightened his hair and lined his face; in his final years he stooped over a wooden cane in a long gray turtleneck and clasped mantle, and a plain nightgown clothed him once he was bedridden.

Personality

On the surface Heiter was a jovial sort, quick to laugh a tense room back to ease and to crack jokes about his fondness for drink, and he teared up readily, whether at the party's misfortunes or his own hangovers. Underneath ran a vein of cynicism: he privately doubted the odds of beating the Demon King, and in boyhood that doubt curdled into envy of Himmel and open skepticism that any of them could win. He made peace with it by choosing to trust Himmel, and later the whole party, even when he could not trust himself. Devotion to the Goddess and to Heaven marked him from childhood. He was also a practiced liar and quietly cunning, famously playing on Frieren's loose sense of time to keep her training Fern long enough to make the girl a capable mage.

Abilities

A gifted priest who climbed to the rank of bishop, Heiter brought both raw power and refined craft to the Hero Party. His mana sense was acute enough to size up other casters; he pegged Frieren's reserves at roughly a fifth of his own when they met, not yet realizing she was holding back, and he later saw through that restraint, a perception even Aura the Guillotine never managed. His own reservoir was enormous, consistent with centuries of accumulated training, and that insight into suppressed mana shaped how he raised Fern.

Drawing on Holy Scripture, Heiter commanded the Goddess's magic. The Blessing of the Goddess gave him a priest's resistance to curses, letting him stagger and recover from Grausam's hex while it floored his companions, a feat the demon noted few clergy could match. His repertoire covered healing wounds, a sustaining spell that freed allies from any need for food, water, or air for as long as two months, a stealth ward that hid those within it from mana detection, protective barriers ranging from a personal shield to a wide enclosing dome, and a binding spell that conjured restraints from a midair circle to pin a target.
