Appearance

Kanne is a small, slight girl, roughly as short as Frieren. Her hair is a short orange crop worked into uneven bangs and a pair of pigtails, the loose strands falling to her jaw, and when she lets it down it takes on a faint wave at about the same length. She usually wears a cropped white top edged in vivid green, the puffy sleeves cut to the elbow and the fabric opened at the shoulders and chest, over bright green shorts on a white belt and white boots that climb past the knee. To cast, she carries a tall straight staff crowned with three crystal-like prongs set around a central jewel.

Personality

Kanne is sunny, sociable, and relaxed, falling into easy conversation with Frieren and Fern the moment she meets them, though fear can get the better of her, as it did when she first attempted flight magic. She blossoms under encouragement, which Lawine chalks up to a childhood of being spoiled, and by Lawine's account she pushes herself hard despite a streak of cowardice, putting in effort when no one is watching and looking out for those around her. For all the insults she throws at Lawine, she counts her a true friend and leans on her in a pinch, grateful for the praise and shoves that have prodded her forward whenever nerves or doubt left her stuck.

History

Kanne and Lawine grew up together and trained at the same Academy of Magic, where a frozen moment of terror during flight practice ended with Lawine literally kicking her off a cliff to force the spell out of her, a blunt brand of encouragement that became the pattern of their friendship. Years later the two entered the First-Class Mage Exam at Äußerst and were sorted, along with Frieren, into the same first-stage party. For all their constant squabbling, they coordinated flawlessly in combat, freezing and flooding in tandem in a way that impressed even Frieren as they chased a capture target across the grounds.

During that first stage Kanne overheard rain striking the unseen barrier walling off the exam zone, a clue that fed Frieren's winning plan to lure the mana-shy quarry toward water. The scheme drew the rival Thirteenth Party into a fight, and when Frieren tore the barrier open to let the rain through, Kanne gathered a vast sphere of rainwater with her water-manipulation spell, Reamstroha, and dropped it on Richter, smashing his defenses after Lawine pinned his hands in ice. Their party advanced. In the dungeon of the second stage they leaned on intel from Lawine's brother to press deep, joined the allied group, and helped clear it, with Kanne paired against a mirror-clone of Richter. The third stage ended her run when Serie failed her on sight, judging that a candidate still frightened of her mana could never picture herself a first-class mage. Undaunted, Kanne and Lawine saw Frieren off in good cheer, vowing to return for the next exam three years on.
