Appearance

Burgundy hair, swept back and long, frames a face whose blue eyes sit above pronounced bags that lend Macht a perpetually weary look. A pair of lengthy horns curves out from his temples. He dresses in a dark green shirt that buttons high at the neck and hangs to the knees, with golden tasseled bands circling his right arm and the Stone Bracelet of Servitude hidden beneath that sleeve; red gloves cover his hands. Draped over his left shoulder is a large blue coat that doubles as his armament, since he can turn it to gold and back at will, most often forging it into an oversized sword or hardening it into an unbreakable shield.

Personality

Macht is generally detached, cool, and indifferent, with the solitary streak typical of demons. His magic is so overwhelming that combat bores him, and he shows little appetite for killing for its own sake; concepts like justice, evil, guilt, and malice simply lie beyond his understanding, as does morality itself. He owes no loyalty to other demons or even the Demon King, having refused to aid Schlacht in his fight with the Hero of the South and cut down a former associate without a flicker of regret. Much of what he does is, by his own account, mere whim. What sets him apart from his kind is an obstinate, almost reckless curiosity about humans, a fixation he chases for centuries despite meager results and even at the risk of his life. He slips easily into human speech and customs, having woven himself so thoroughly into the city of Weise that he was credited with helping many residents, though for a demon such warmth is only a tool for earning trust. Beneath the calm sits deep pride in his sorcery, and Serie's mockery of his power, particularly the jab that he cannot reverse his gold, visibly stings him.

Abilities

No member of the Seven Sages of Destruction is reckoned stronger than Macht, who Serie claims could gild the entire Northern Plateau on a whim; he numbered among the mages who once bested Frieren, and even the Greater Demon Solitär confesses she would rather not face him. Despite being a mage, he fights by preference with a golden greatsword and possesses raw strength enough to shatter Lernen's barriers and rout a demon host. His mana sense is extraordinarily fine, blanketing the gilded territory so thoroughly that hiding from him is nearly hopeless, and his reserves, built over six centuries, are vast enough that he claims he could hold off Denken for three days and nights.

His signature is the curse Diagoldze, which transmutes any matter into a gold so alien it registers as an entirely different substance, indestructible and beyond the reach of even the Goddess's magic. Because a curse cannot be perceived as ordinary spellcraft, it is almost impossible to guard against or dodge, and it needs no trigger, striking even at great range through sealing barriers. Crucially, he can restore his own body and his coat from gold but cannot bring a transmuted person back, so for him casting the curse and killing are one and the same; that very transformation also masks his mana, which is part of why mages find both him and his Golden Land so unnerving. He can spin the gold into needles, spears, and clouds of lethal debris, and unlike most demons he commands a range of human magic learned through Solitär, enough to train the imperial mage Denken and to wield Zoltraak, a spell he credits to an old friend. His ambition to live among humans ended badly: after he turned Weise to gold, the Continental Magic Association sealed him away, and his eventual reckoning with Frieren's allies costs him his life.
