Summary

Riding through the Laub Hills, the party hears Sein insist their group lacks a mature woman, a complaint that goes nowhere. At the next village they find every resident asleep but breathing, the work of a curse. Frieren explains that human magic cannot undo curses, but the Goddess magic wielded by priests can, making this Sein's task. He identifies the culprit as a Chaos Flower subspecies that lulls victims to sleep and drains their mana.

One by one the curse takes Stark and then Fern, so Frieren shields the pair and presses on with Sein toward the source. When she too begins to nod off, she warns Sein not to face the monster alone and promises to finish it herself. At the flower, Sein's Three Spears of the Goddess rebounds off its mirror-like leaves. Recalling Heiter's lesson that trusting Frieren's word matters more than mutual understanding, he wakes her, and she obliterates the creature's weak point before he can even point it out.

The journey continues to the fortress city of Vorig, where the party's empty purse meets Lord Orden, head of one of the north's great knightly houses. He has secretly lost his eldest son Wirt in battle and wants Stark, who strongly resembles the young man, to appear as his stand-in at an upcoming gathering of regional figures. The pay is ten gold coins and, at Frieren's insistence, a grimoire.

Stark endures two months of etiquette, riding, and dancing lessons, with Fern reluctantly trained as his escort. He observes Orden's younger son Mut and urges the lord to voice his encouragement plainly. At the ball, Stark and Fern's hand-drawn dance charms the guests. Orden privately admits he parted from Wirt in anger before the death and offers Stark a place at his side, but Stark declines, since he too left unfinished words with Eisen and means to return to him.

Notes

The anime opens with an added wagon conversation about how long Fern and Stark have traveled with Frieren, where the manga begins on a path. Extra touches at the cursed village include Frieren noting the animals behave normally and Fern confirming the sleepers still breathe. The discussion of Goddess magic moves indoors, and altar details were designed in coordination with the manga's authors.

Vorig and Orden's grounds are filled with birch-like trees chosen to symbolize rebirth and growth, mirroring how Wirt's will passes to his brother Mut. The anime expands Frieren, Fern, and Sein's downtime and depicts Fern's etiquette training, absent from the manga. The acclaimed ballroom dance was animated entirely by hand, with motion-capture footage used only as reference.
