Kagura Sohma

An orange cat backpack rides on her shoulders nearly everywhere she goes, the accessory fans recognize her by. Kagura stands at a petite, average height with a slight build, and her fair complexion flushes easily. Brown hair falls to about her upper back, worn loose or split into ribbon-tied braids at either side. Her large, round eyes carry the same brown shade in the manga and the 2019 series, while the 2001 adaptation renders them grey.

Drawn toward feminine outfits, she favors dresses and skirts. The rarely glimpsed school uniform pairs a white tailored shirt with black sleeves, a yellow ribbon, a dark top underneath, full-length tights, and black loafers.

On the surface Kagura reads as gentle, courteous, and warm, yet that calm can flip in a heartbeat into stubbornness, impulsiveness, and startling aggression. Nothing triggers the switch faster than Kyo; her affection spills out alongside literal blows, and she often batters him before her senses catch up. These outbursts stem from emotional immaturity rather than cruelty, since she loses her grip whenever feelings surge and charges ahead with the recklessness of the Boar she embodies.

Personal boundaries mean little around Kyo, though she hugs other relatives like Yuki just as readily. Beneath the clinginess sits a genuinely friendly, big-sister sort of warmth, and she wears every mood in plain view. She first treats Tohru as a rival for Kyo's heart but grows into a real friendship, willingly stepping aside once it becomes obvious that Kyo loves Tohru. Being turned down forces Kagura to face how self-absorbed she had been, and by the story's close she settles into a calmer, more grounded young woman who apologizes without fuss when she oversteps.

As a child Kagura resented being born into the Zodiac and convinced herself that her parents' constant fighting was her fault, unable to bear the self-loathing that struck when she watched her mother weep. At seven she came across a five-year-old Kyo scratching a drawing with a branch, and recognizing him as the Cat whose burden dwarfed hers, she latched onto him out of pity and called it friendship. The two played often, and her training at Kazuma's dojo left her freakishly strong. She once forced a marriage promise from Kyo at knifepoint and later seized his Juzu bead bracelet against his wishes; that act led her to glimpse his true form, which sent her fleeing in horror. Rather than confront the pain she had caused, she buried her guilt by insisting to herself that she loved him.

Years later she barges into Shigure's household, pummels a startled Kyo, and announces that she is his fiancée. Her early jealousy of Tohru fades into friendship after the pair cook together, and outings such as a Valentine's double date deepen the bond. When Kazuma strips Kyo's bracelet to expose the true cat before Tohru, the old trauma resurfaces and Kagura quietly slips away. Isuzu bluntly tells her to abandon the one-sided love, wounding her further.

On a private outing to the very spot where she first witnessed his monstrous shape, Kagura finally admits that pity, guilt, and self-disgust had driven her pursuit. Kyo assures her there is nothing to forgive yet states plainly he will never love her back, and only then does she grasp that her feelings had turned real. She shields Kisa when Akito lashes out at the New Year's banquet, presses to uncover Rin's hidden hospitalization, and later slaps Tohru in frustration before entrusting her own feelings for Kyo to her. Her curse lifts eighth among the twelve, a bittersweet release, and in the epilogue she prepares to begin working while wishing Kyo and Tohru every happiness. She is implied to marry eventually, since a son of hers later attends the Sohma gatherings.
