Komaki Nakao

Slim and of average height, Komaki is often called very cute. Her straight hair reaches just past her chin in a bob, the fringe framing a pair of round eyes. In uniform she wears a white shirt, a black tie, an open jacket, a short black skirt, shin-high stockings, and brown loafers, while off campus she favors pale, loose, oversized clothing.

Warm, sociable, and openly cheerful, Komaki cares deeply about people, even ones she scarcely knows. That heart showed when Kakeru's cruel words to Tohru left her both furious and hurt, since she refused to rank two people's grief against each other. She forgives faults readily and does her best to support others even when she does not fully grasp their situations.

Rather gullible, she swallows whatever Kakeru tells her despite his habit of teasing her with falsehoods, once believing his claim that Yuki was a girl dressing as a boy. She has a temper of her own, though, and will smack him when he needles her or saddles her with odd nicknames. Above all she adores meat, so much that it can seem to outrank even Kakeru in her affections, which is why he fondly calls her his 'Meat Angel.'

Komaki and Kakeru were classmates in middle school, and she fell for him even as his difficult home life kept him remote; once things settled for him, he returned her feelings and the two began dating. As a high-school freshman she lost her father in the car crash that also killed Tohru's mother Kyoko, a grief that nonetheless left her sympathetic enough to visit Tohru and burn incense for Kyoko. Kakeru came along and coldly told Tohru she did not deserve all the pity while Komaki grieved too; when Komaki learned of it she wept, unwilling to have their sorrows placed on a scale, and the shame pushed Kakeru to begin changing.

In the third year she is formally introduced when Kakeru brings Yuki to meet her. Greeting Yuki eagerly, she realizes Kakeru had lied about Yuki cross-dressing, rounds on her boyfriend, and apologizes to their guest, later confiding to Yuki how much she loves Kakeru despite their squabbles. Near graduation she urges Kakeru toward university and a range of experiences rather than stepping straight into her family's dry-cleaning business, and she brushes off his teasing about cheating, trusting him completely. By Fruits Basket Another she has married him and had two children, Michi and Kou, the household keeping a tradition of feasting on meat all day on the twenty-ninth of each month, though she grows notably gloomy each February.
