Kyoko Honda

Kyoko was a slim, fair-skinned woman with short, bobbed hair the color of orange that deepened toward the tips. Long, M-shaped bangs typically concealed her right eye while softening her features, and beneath them sat large, round eyes of light brown edged by long lashes, often set off by earrings and pink polish on her nails.

Her everyday style ran casual and feminine, a yellow long-sleeved top with black slacks and pink heels, though she also kept the red coat from her old gang days. In her youth her hair reached her mid-back, and she penciled in eyebrows so faintly that Katsuya nicknamed her 'Ms. No Eyebrows.'

As a teenager Kyoko was a savage, foul-mouthed delinquent who lashed out at the world and everyone in it, a rage rooted in parents who never made her feel wanted. Katsuya changed that. Given the acceptance no one had ever offered her, she left that life behind and blossomed into a bright, endlessly smiling woman, if one still ashamed of her past. His death nearly undid her; she abandoned Tohru and came close to ending her life, until the memory of her daughter pulled her back and she vowed to live for the girl's sake.

From then on she was the warm, gentle mother Tohru remembers. Deeply wise and emotionally perceptive, she shared her hard-won understanding with people like Arisa, Saki, and Kyo, believing that real strength grows only out of pain endured. Having known loneliness herself, she recognized it at once in others and embraced them without hesitation, all while staying playful, cool, and just a little sassy.

Born Kyoko Katsunuma into a cold home, she grew up under a father who ignored his family and a mother fixated on appearances, so starved of affection that she could not recall ever being held. She drifted into a rough crowd before middle school and rose to lead a biker gang, earning the nickname 'The Red Butterfly' from the way her taillights streaked through the night. On one of her rare days in class she crossed paths with Katsuya Honda, a teacher-in-training who saw straight through her fury to the loneliness beneath and drew her toward him.

She resolved to reform, but when she tried to quit the gang they beat her badly enough to land her in the hospital and cost her the entrance exams, and her father seized the moment to disown her. Katsuya stood up to her parents, proposed, and took her away. The couple wed quietly by the sea and welcomed Tohru, only for Katsuya to die suddenly of pneumonia. Grief nearly drove Kyoko to follow him, but she chose her daughter and rebuilt their life together.

Along the way she befriended a young Kyo Sohma, gave him hope, and later took in Arisa and Saki. Her life ended when a car struck her on the way to work; bleeding out, she recognized Kyo standing nearby and tried to remind him of his promise to protect Tohru, but only the words 'I'll never forgive you' escaped her, a misunderstanding that would torment him. Her final thoughts were of Tohru's happiness, and in the afterlife she reunited with Katsuya.
