Tohru Honda

Tohru is a slim, fair-skinned girl of average height, pretty and gentle in looks. Silky brown hair reaches partway down her back, framed by an eyebrow-length fringe and two long strands that drape over her shoulders, and her large, round brown eyes sit beneath long lashes. She tends to tie her hair with bows, most often pink or yellow, either a single large one at the back or a pair pulling her front strands aside.

Most of the time she wears her navy sailor-style school uniform with its pleated blue skirt, though outside class she favors plain, sturdy dresses and skirts over anything fashionable. Her cleaning job puts her in a light blue shirt and trousers with white gloves and a bandana, and the rare occasions she looks truly dressed up are when someone like Ayame or Mine decides to style her.

Tohru meets the world with almost boundless kindness, an open-hearted, cheerful girl who finds the good in everyone and holds no grudges, not even against Akito, who scarred so many of the zodiac. Losing her father as a toddler and her mother as a teenager never wiped the smile from her face, and her gentle, welcoming warmth pulls wounded people toward her, so much so that both Yuki and Isuzu come to regard her as the tender mother figure they always wanted. She helps the Sohmas face their pain expecting nothing back, and stands up for her friends without a second thought.

That sunny surface, however, hides real fragility. She struggles to assert herself, swallows complaints, and quietly believes she deserves little kindness, all while dreading that the people she loves will vanish and leave her alone. Much of this traces to her parents: after her father's death she came to resent him for nearly taking her grieving mother away, and she adopted his overly polite speech to keep her mother close. As the story unfolds she learns to voice her own wants, lean on others, and grow bolder, eventually setting her heart on freeing the zodiac, and Kyo above all, from their fate.

Tohru was the only child of Kyoko and Katsuya Honda, a happy trio until Katsuya died of pneumonia when she was three. His relatives cruelly questioned whether she was even his, and a grief-stricken Kyoko sank into a depression that nearly ended in suicide before the thought of her daughter pulled her back. Mother and daughter grew inseparable after that, and Kyoko's warmth and wisdom shaped the girl Tohru became. Bullied at school in a game called Fruits Basket, she once got lost and was guided home by a boy in a hat, Yuki, whose cap she kept for years as a cherished first love. In middle school she formed an unshakable bond with Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima, the two friends who would stay closest to her.

Everything changed when Kyoko was killed in a car accident just as Tohru began high school. Rather than burden her grandfather while his home was renovated, she secretly pitched a tent in the woods, which happened to sit on Sohma land. A landslide wrecked the tent, Shigure took her in, and after she accidentally embraced Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure and watched them turn into a cat, a rat, and a dog, she learned the family's secret. Granted permission to stay, she gradually met the rest of the zodiac, coaxing each of them out of isolation with her acceptance while growing especially close to Kyo.

As she uncovered the cruelty behind the curse, Kyo's looming confinement and the zodiac's binding to Akito, Tohru resolved to break it, admitting at last that above everything she wanted to set Kyo free, because she had come to love him. That path led through wrenching confrontations: Kyo's confession that he had witnessed Kyoko's death, Akito's violence, and a plunge from a crumbling cliff. Tohru survived, reconciled with Kyo, and even offered Akito friendship. When Kyo finally embraced her without transforming, the curse shattered, freeing them both. The two later began a life together, and in Fruits Basket Another she has married Kyo and raised three children, her eldest son Hajime carrying the next generation's story.
