Let the Watermelon Splitting Contest Begin!

Hiro learns by phone that his mother is expecting, and soon after Momiji, Haru, Yuki, and Kyo come back from the market to hold a watermelon splitting contest on the sand. A memory of playing the same game with her own mother rises in Tohru, but she keeps it to herself, still stung by Hiro's earlier complaint that she never speaks of her father, only Kyoko. She finds herself wondering about the parents of the cursed family. Yuki, meanwhile, is caught in recollections of the harm Akito once did him, and watching through a window as Tohru tucks a blanket over the three sleeping youngsters, then smiles at Kyo's entrance, leaves him jealous enough to slip out for a walk.

Kyo confronts Tohru about the way she bottles things up, telling her how much her silence worries and irritates him, and coaxes her to speak. When she asks about his parents, he admits he has not seen his father in years and begins to say his mother killed before catching himself and calling it an accident from when he was four or five. Tohru shares her own memory, of a watermelon game that ended with her mother smashing the household shrine to her late father. Out on his walk Yuki runs into Kureno and Akito, and the family head's approach fills him with dread. Down at the water Shigure reads while Hatori challenges his meddling, only for Shigure to shrug that everything is already twisted and he is glad to help Akito twist it further.

Shigure returns to announce Akito's arrival and urges the others to pay their respects, leaving Tohru home with the uninvited Kyo, who grumbles that Akito shows up only to sour everyone's mood before departing. At the house where Akito lodges, he sulks that Shigure did not greet him at once, boasts of having gently wounded the lonely Yuki, and sneers, "it's just so Yuki, I could vomit." Afterward Hatori tells Shigure he holds no anger, since he lacks the nerve to change things himself, and Akito assures the four remaining members that he missed and loves them all.

Uneasy that no one has come back, Tohru sets out and finds Yuki, and after she points him toward a sky full of shooting stars he decides to lift the lid on what he has long held inside. He thanks her for accepting him and for her endless optimism, recalling a childhood day when he guided a lost Tohru home and felt, for once, genuinely needed after years of being told he was useless. He seems to press a kiss to her forehead, a tear falling to her cheek, telling her he would be lost without her. The title comes from one of Momiji's lines, and the episode adapts chapters 58 and 59, with Akito's intrusion serving to reassert his slipping grip over the zodiac.
