There Are No Memories It's OK to Forget

Hana and Yuki marvel that Tohru can seem so bright barely a year after losing her mother, yet something painful lingers behind her smile that even her nearest friends cannot detect.

Tohru, Arisa, Kyo, Saki, and Yuki gather at Kyoko's grave to mark the first anniversary of her death, leaving flowers and sharing a picnic. Afterward, Momiji Sohma drops by Tohru's workplace, where she happens on a photograph of his mother and learns of his sister Momo. Momiji recounts how his mother rejected him with her whole being at birth, and a flashback shows his father promising the boy that she would recover if her memories of him were wiped. Hatori is seen asking the woman whether she has any final regrets, and she answers that her deepest regret is that such a thing ever came from her body before her recollections of Momiji are erased.

Back in the present, Momiji's mother enters with Momo and urges him to head home soon, since his mother is surely worrying. Once she and Momo leave, Tohru is left in tears.

This is the 2001 version of a story the 2019 series retold as "That's a Secret." The script adapts Chapters 23 and 24 of the manga. A flashback also reveals that Uotani appears to have dyed the coat she inherited from Kyoko, which is shown in its original red.
