Holy Mother

Scar leads Edward to the graves of Reole's dead and reminds him of his share in the tragedy, insisting he must finish forging the Philosopher's Stone and end the military's tyranny, especially since the townsfolk share Ishvalan blood the army never accounted for. At the outpost, Martel's body is removed from Alphonse's armor, and Al, unable to explain what he learned, recalls her warning that the Führer, a homunculus, means to raze Reole as he did Ishval, along with the ouroboros he glimpsed. Held under guard, Ed learns the mute Rose has become the town's Holy Mother by rallying the people, though he argues nothing changes while they follow anyone's orders, and he secretly sends a letter to Al.

The Mustang Unit deciphers that Scar has shaped the entire city into a transmutation array meant to consume the soldiers as sacrifices, echoing the secret of Laboratory 5, and Al is dispatched to reinforce Ed, unaware his returned pocket watch has been seeded with red stones by Tucker. Kimbley arrives with Tucker's freshly forged chimeras to strike Reole as a diversion, and Scar, releasing Ed to evacuate the people, moves to face them alone, killing the chimeras and confronting Kimbley, whom he recognizes as the man who scarred him and once owned his brother's grafted arm. In the tunnels, Ed and the fleeing townsfolk are set upon by Sloth and Wrath; Wrath boasts he has no weakness since his stillborn remains vanished into the Gate. Above ground, Al traps Kimbley in a stone hand and denounces him as a mere murderer, but the distraction lets Kimbley break free, transmute Scar's left arm, and set up his revenge. Scar tears the arm off and drives his destructive alchemy through Kimbley's torso, leaving him mortally hurt, though the dying alchemist snatches Ed's red-stone watch and hurls it to keep Scar back while beginning to turn Al's armor into a bomb. In the sewers Sloth admits Ed did not "make her right," and the trauma of his failed transmutation freezes him as Rose regains her voice and Wrath moves to kill her and her child.

Despite its title card, this 2003 entry actually carries the on-screen title "The Scar" and draws adapted content from Chapter 30. It closed out the series' third season and marks the last use of the third ending theme before the switch to the closing theme "I Will." The name Holy Mother refers to Rose Thomas.
