Alphonse's armor slowly darkens under Kimbley's dying transmutation, and the bomb-maker confesses he cannot reverse his own work before he passes. Lust reminds Scar that only Edward could undo it and urges him to abandon Al and complete the Philosopher's Stone, but Scar now sees she is nothing like his brother's cold, absent fiancee. In the sewers, Ed pins Wrath and turns to face Sloth, finally admitting aloud that he recognized his own mother in her before charging with an ice sword. Sloth breaks free into her true homunculus form, and both she and Wrath press the attack until Ed walls them off with transmuted spikes to shield himself and Rose.

At the outpost, Mustang, Hawkeye, and Armstrong corner Archer and Tucker, with Armstrong revealing he only feigned support to expose the corruption Hughes had chased. Archer looses the remaining chimeras and vows to ride the Reole incident to glory, while Pride and Gluttony watch from within, hoping Scar himself ends up among the Stone's ingredients. Refusing to let Lust stop him, Scar fixes the locket onto Al's suit and painfully transmutes the incomplete Stone into it, losing his last arm but nullifying Kimbley's bomb alchemy and preparing to form the Philosopher's Stone inside Alphonse. He then shields Lust from soldiers' bullets, not for her sake but for the dead woman she resembles, and confesses that watching the Elrics live for one another taught him he truly loved his brother, refusing to reclaim a name he feels he no longer deserves. As the troops swarm Reole, Scar activates the giant array using the final reserves of his power, consuming himself along with the soldiers caught inside. Ed reaches the ruined city to find only Al, who now carries the finished Philosopher's Stone in his chest; Lust confirms it and warns the brothers that every force will now hunt them, unable to strike Al herself because of the locket he holds.

This entry opens the 2003 series' fourth and final season and marks Scar's death in that continuity, along with the soldiers consumed to create the Stone. Unlike the manga and Brotherhood, where Scar survives to help rebuild his homeland, here he dies before seeing his country restored, and his sacrifice ironically hands the homunculi and their master fresh reason to pursue the Elrics.
