Episode 5: I Can't Say It Out Loud

Trouble starts when Souta mentions having seen Miyamura walking to school beside a girl. Hori takes it badly and gives him the cold shoulder the next day. Seeking her out after class, Miyamura first asks whether she had been awake during his confession, then explains the girl was Shindou's girlfriend Chika, who had twisted her ankle, leaving him to carry both her and Shindou. His casual use of Chika's given name stings Hori enough that she flings her textbooks and storms off. He still brings the books to her home, where the pair apologize and untangle the mix-up, and Hori admits she had indeed been awake that night.

Hori's father Kyousuke turns up unannounced and asks whether the two are dating; Hori confirms it out loud, stunning Miyamura. Walking home hand in hand, Miyamura says he wants to come to know her little by little, and as she turns to go he catches her wrist to thank her, then flusters at how hard goodbyes have become. Tooru learns of the couple and, though quietly hurt, chooses to back them and renew his friendship with Miyamura. The following day Sakura, feeling plain next to Remi, gathers her nerve and confides that she has feelings for Tooru.

Sawako Hirabayashi wrote the screenplay, with Yukiko Imai serving as both storyboard artist and episode director. The episode aired in Japan on February 7, 2021, and in English on March 13, 2021. It adapts portions of manga chapters 21 through 25.
