Chapter 67

Jolted awake on the couch by a noise, Miyamura runs through a lineup of imagined intruders before a clean hand pressed to the window rules out a zombie. He draws the curtains to find Honoka outside, shaken by unfamiliar creaks at her own house. He tells her she should have texted first, then reassures her that homes simply settle as the temperature shifts, and he coaxes her into staying up for video games. The next morning at school, his exhaustion draws teasing from Hori and Ishikawa, and a passing remark from Honoka about her drained hot chocolate turns into a round of good-natured bickering.

Walking home alone after class, Miyamura steps on a scarf and spots two girls watching from an upper window. Piecing together that Honoka has been targeted, he tells her to walk toward him if the pair threw her scarf out, and she does. He then faces the window and silently mouths something that convinces the girls he has insulted them, sending them into a rage while the two head off together.

On the way back, Honoka confides that the bullying started the one time she broke ranks with the others. Miyamura counsels her that the ordeal is temporary and that ignoring the group turns any eventual peace offering into her own victory.
