Appearance

He was a short, aged man of slender frame with a narrow jaw. His grey hair reached medium length and was tied back in a ponytail, matched by a long, drooping moustache of the same color. A conical straw hat topped him at all times, along with hand guards in the style Jiraiya wore. Beyond the walls of his village he added a beige cloak and carried a shakujō whose two lower rings held a dangling lock.

Personality

Confidence bordering on arrogance defined him, and he warned Team 7 not to take the Jōmae ninja lightly just before he apparently ended his own life in a blast. That act underscored a fierce conviction and loyalty toward his home, since he would sooner die than let any detail about it fall into Konoha's hands. He stayed level-headed and clear about his priorities in a crisis, retreating from a direct clash while instructing Hanare to carry the intelligence she had gathered back home in safety.

History

Given his rank, he was presumably a shrewd leader adept at putting his subordinates' intelligence to the best possible use, though his choice to flee or take his own life rather than face three genin marked him as physically frail, and the speed with which Team 7 overtook him showed he was hardly quick either. He had personally arranged to train Hanare beyond the village so that she would carry no knowledge of the settlement itself. Years afterward he sent her to gather information on Konohagakure. Cornered at last by Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno, he is believed to have killed himself in an explosion.
