Hanare

Slender and fair, Hanare has brown eyes and straight hair of a muted green that reaches her waist. Posing as a travelling street performer, she tucks it beneath an orange, red-striped hat with a single bang across her left eye, and dresses in a fur-trimmed red top layered over patterned skirts and a pink sash, completing the disguise with red lipstick and eyeshadow, a beauty mark under her right eye, triple-pearl earrings and a purple choker.

While Kakashi escorts her through the village she lets two bangs frame her face above a short pale-yellow kimono top and light purple skirt. Underneath, however, she keeps her true shinobi gear: a brown flak jacket over red mesh, black trousers bound with bandages, shin guards, fingerless gloves reaching her upper arms, and the Jomae headband, her hair loosely tied back with a red ribbon.

Hanare's signature power works through her right eye, which lets her peer into her own mind and, in turn, into the mind of anyone who intrudes upon it, allowing her to collect intelligence across a range of subjects. She can also purge every scrap of gathered information at will, activating the technique by tracing set patterns with her eye. Years of rigorous conditioning have left her with an iron will, unbroken by any torture, even at the hands of a psychological master like Ibiki Morino.

As a small girl Hanare knew deep loneliness, never having met her family or seen her own village, and she was schooled in espionage from her earliest years. One day a young Kakashi found her weeping near her village, carried her on his back, and taught her to look up and read the clouds to find her way; the kindness sparked a lasting affection for him. Fully trained years later, she is dispatched into the Land of Fire to gather intelligence on Konoha but is seized by the Anbu and confined for interrogation.

She surrenders nothing, so the Third Hokage orders a gentler approach, and Inoichi Yamanaka finds within her only one memory, that cherished encounter with Kakashi. Asked to spend a day drawing further into her mind with his Sharingan, Kakashi is trailed by Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura, whose antics send the pair tumbling into an accidental kiss. When Konoha learns the Jomae have captured the jonin Riichi and proposes a trade, Kakashi resists giving her up, having sensed during that kiss that her own eye technique had quietly siphoned intel from Inoichi.

The swap goes ahead atop a trap meant to keep her from carrying the secrets home, and in the chaos she flees. Kakashi corners her on a cliff, where she claims to have wiped away the Konoha intelligence, having found in the village the belonging she always craved, and asks to die by his hand. He refuses to slay a ninja stripped of her pride and tells her to go. To the others he reports that she leapt from the cliff, praising her as an admirable shinobi, though in truth she survives and slips away to parts unknown.
