B.N. Winslow

A stocky, middle-aged Black man, Winslow keeps his black hair cropped short and wears a matching mustache. His wardrobe leans formal and understated, a gray coat over a white shirt with a black tie, finished by black trousers cinched with a brown belt.

Winslow is a devoted educator who genuinely wants his students to succeed. Where a stricter administrator might come down hard, he shows unusual understanding, extending patience to Mark Grayson despite the boy's chronic absences. Sympathetic to the grief of a lost father, he chooses to offer Mark a chance to recommit rather than simply expel him, prizing compassion over rigid discipline.

As principal of Reginald Vel Johnson High School, Winslow looks out for his students, first appearing when he stops Mark in a hallway to ask about his college plans. He later delivers a graduation address encouraging the class to be bold, original, and invincible against whatever they face.

After moving on to become dean of Upstate University, he confronts Mark over failing grades and poor attendance following the young man's two-month absence. Rather than suspend him, and mindful of the apparent death of his father, Winslow grants Mark a month to decide between committing to his studies or pursuing another path; Mark ultimately walks away from college for his hero duties. When one of the evil Invincibles sets Upstate ablaze during the Invincible War in early 2024, casualties mount among students and staff, and whether Winslow survives is left unresolved.
