In a desert dig, a man named Bryant revives the ancient Ka-Hor, only for the resurrection to go horribly wrong. Elsewhere, Nolan trains Mark on flight and endurance, racing him to Mount Everest and reflecting on the peace Viltrum once brought across the galaxy and on the loss that drove him to Earth. On the home front, Debbie helps a grieving Olga sell her house and begins quietly investigating Damien Darkblood, sensing that Nolan is hiding something about the Guardians' murders.

Mark shares an awkward outing with Amber, dodging her questions about travel, while Nolan confronts Darkblood directly and warns him away from the family. Cecil arrives seeking Nolan's help to shadow NASA's first crewed mission to Mars, but Nolan refuses, insisting his family and Earth come first. Mark volunteers instead, and after his parents weigh the risks, he agrees to the two-week journey. Cecil privately admits the mission is also a test to gauge Mark's character. Meanwhile Nolan and Debbie reminisce about their disastrous-then-charming first trip to Rome, and Nolan finally confesses that Cecil suspects him of the killings, asking Debbie to trust him.

On Mars, Mark endures the dull voyage until the astronauts vanish. Remembering the Martians live underground, he lifts a boulder, fights off swarming Sequids, and is brought before the Martian Emperor, who explains the parasites' world-ending danger and sentences the humans to execution. Mark tricks the Martians and escapes with the crew, lifting their ship to safety before grabbing a souvenir rock, unaware that one astronaut has already been replaced and quietly infected. Back on Earth, Cecil has Darkblood banished to Hell to keep Nolan's secret buried, though the demon leaves behind evidence for Debbie to find, and Robot advances his own hidden scheme by cloning himself a new body.

Mark takes his first trip to another planet, shadowing the NASA mission to Mars, and encounters the Martians and the Sequids for the first time. He rescues three astronauts, but Rus Livingston is secretly swapped for a Martian and left behind to be taken by the Sequids.

Cecil has Damien Darkblood exiled to Hell to protect the cover-up around Omni-Man, though the demon plants clues for Debbie. Robot begins his cloning project using Rex Splode's blood, and Nolan's growing tension with Debbie and Cecil deepens the season's central mystery.

The title quotes an astronaut in the eighteenth issue of the comic upon landing on Mars. Darkblood's fate deliberately echoes the death of Rorschach from Watchmen, with Cecil silencing him to keep Nolan's crimes hidden while the demon leaves a record behind, much as Rorschach did.

The corpse of Bi-Plane is visible as the shuttle lifts off, and the episode is noted for its brighter, more varied animation style. This mission directly sets up the larger Sequid conflict that erupts in Season 2.
