You Look Kinda Dead

The sixth episode threads a college trip through the fallout of the Machine Head fight. It opens with D.A. Sinclair abducting an arrogant student, Doug Cheston, and converting him into one of his cyborgs, silencing him by cutting out his vocal cords. At the GDA, Black Samson, Monster Girl, and Invincible arrive in critical condition; Mark wakes after six days to find his teammates still critical, and Robot's grasp of Monster Girl's physiology proves key to keeping her alive.

Patched up, Mark reconciles with Amber and joins her and William on a tour of Upstate University, guided by William's crush Rick. Eve, meanwhile, walks out on her unsupportive parents and builds herself a treehouse, resolving to help the world directly rather than attend college. On campus, Sinclair openly needles a biology professor and takes a sinister interest in Rick.

One of Sinclair's cyborgs erupts during the visit and nearly kills William, forcing Mark to transform in the open; William recognizes him as Invincible. The creature kills itself in horror after glimpsing its own face, and a furious Amber, again finding Mark absent, decides she misjudged him. Sinclair then abducts Rick and converts him, luring William underground. Mark follows into the lab, is battered by cyborgs, and discovers Rick among them, though Sinclair claims his emotions have been stripped away.

When Sinclair begins cutting William, Rick recognizes his boyfriend, breaks free, and turns on his maker. William chases Sinclair down and Mark shatters his jaw with a backhand. Cecil arrives to take Sinclair into custody and promises to help his victims. Back home, Debbie confronts Nolan outright about the murders; he denies it, then drives his fist through the wall when she refuses to relent.

A quieter thread has Art Rosenbaum examine Nolan's recovered suit for Debbie. The traces of the Guardians' weapons prove a fight took place, but the oldest oxidized blood sits on Nolan's own wrist, meaning he struck first. Debbie asks Art to keep the finding secret. Elsewhere, Robot rewards the Mauler Twins for rapidly growing cells from unknown DNA while withholding payment, and two boys scheme to dig up the Immortal and drink from his skull, only to be intercepted by the Twins.

The title quotes a line Invincible says in issue 20 during a fight with a ReAnimen. Sinclair's storyline, compressed here into a single episode, plays out over several years in the source comics.
