Kazeshini

Character

Kazeshini is the scythe-and-chain Zanpakuto of Shuhei Hisagi, co-lieutenant of the Gotei 13's 9th Division. A calm, dutiful officer with a punk edge, Hisagi dreads the death-shaped weapon he carries, having been taught that fear is what makes a warrior fit to wield a blade.

Appearance

Tall and lean with dark grey eyes and cropped black hair, Hisagi bears three scars slashing down over his right eye, the legacy of a boyhood Hollow attack. A bold 69 marks his left cheek, a nod to the captain who once rescued him, joined by a blue stripe that runs from his nose out across his left cheek. He favors a sleeveless black uniform with his lieutenant's badge tied to one arm, and wears a choker and matching armbands that conceal an explosive trick. After the timeskip he loosens his hair to fall against his face near his ears.

Personality

Mature, composed, and responsible, Hisagi carries himself in a way that clashes with his rough look, tending to shoulder duty and sidestep needless violence. He once shared his former captain Tosen's ideals of justice, and after that man's betrayal he swore alongside Sajin Komamura to open his eyes and bring him back. He openly dislikes the reaping shape of his Shikai and fears its power, treating that very fear, per Tosen's teaching, as the mark of a true soldier. A lower-class upbringing left him thrifty, and lighter moments reveal a comic, sometimes gloomy side; he strums a guitar in his spare time, dreams of forming a band, and juggles editorial duties for the Seireitei's magazine.

Abilities

As a lieutenant, Hisagi commands high spiritual power and has sharpened his ordinary swordsmanship precisely so he need not release his blade, regularly holding his own against opponents who have already drawn on their Shikai. He is skilled at flash-step and at wordless mid-level Kido, which he threads into his attacks, and is strong enough to slam the giant Ayon to the ground with his chains. His Zanpakuto, Kazeshini, answers the command to reap, splitting into a pair of twin-bladed kusarigama linked by a long chain and resembling spinning pinwheels. Though he loathes its form, he is a master of this chained-scythe style, flinging the weapons as projectiles and steering them by their extendable chains to strike from unpredictable angles, snare foes, or, with the Kubikake technique, whip the chain around an enemy's neck. His Bankai stays unrevealed, though years later he claims to have finally mastered it.
