The Immortal is a centuries-old hero in Invincible whose long life has spanned countless identities, from a medieval knight to Abraham Lincoln. A founding Guardian of the Globe and the lone survivor of Omni-Man's massacre, he returns to lead the team and eventually seeks peace through his bond with Dupli-Kate.
Standing six foot four and weighing around a hundred and eighteen kilograms, the Immortal cuts an imposing figure with a heavily muscled build, pale skin, jet-black hair, and sharp steel-blue eyes. He usually holds himself with a stern, commanding bearing, though quieter moments let the strain of endless life show in his face.
His hero suit is a blue bodysuit accented in white and yellow, arranged so a central stripe and a ring around the neck read as a stylized letter I, finished with matching gloves and boots. Across history his look shifted with the age: hides and bone in ancient times, plated knight's armor and a red cape in the medieval period, fur and a battered helmet with a braided beard among the Vikings, a tricorn-topped colonial uniform during the Revolution, a long-coated gunslinger's outfit in the Old West, wartime military dress through the World Wars, and finally the blue-and-white costume with its I emblem and cape as the world's first modern superhero.
Forged across thousands of years of war and loss, the Immortal stands as the steadfast anchor of the Guardians of the Globe, a living legend hardened into a symbol. Stoic and iron-willed, he naturally commands respect and leans toward solving problems with his fists rather than words, guided always by a rigid sense of justice that leaves him impatient with nuance and hesitation.
That legendary shell hides a man coming apart. Centuries of accumulated trauma have frayed his balance, swinging him between calm authority and sudden rage, all fed by guilt, wounded pride, and a fear that the modern world is leaving him behind. Having outlived countless loved ones, he dreads forming bonds only to lose them again, which is why his relationship with Dupli-Kate matters so much: her youth and hope crack him open and reawaken a taste for actually living rather than merely enduring.
Even that reawakening stays fragile, since opening up forces him to confront how damaged he has become. In the end he walks a knife's edge between duty and self-destruction, a leader carrying the weight of ages who quietly longs to lay his burdens down and find peace through love and connection instead of another battle.
Exposure to a swirling blue energy anomaly rewrote the Immortal's body, lifting him far above ordinary humans and even most powered beings; before Omni-Man's arrival he was reckoned the strongest creature on Earth, roughly a match for a Viltrumite though never quite able to overpower one. He flies with real speed and agility, ranks among the fastest beings on the planet, hits hard enough to level city blocks, and endures punishment, from impalement to the vacuum of space, that would kill almost anyone else.
True to his name, he never ages and needs no food, water, sleep, or air, and his healing factor knits wounds and regrows lost limbs almost at once. So long as enough of his body survives and is reconnected, he can even return from apparent death, since his corpse does not decay; only the total destruction of his head is truly final. These gifts let him trade blows with Omni-Man, drawing Nolan's blood and gouging his eyes before being overpowered, and to keep swinging against the variant Nogogglesible during the Invincible War even while badly outmatched.
Millennia of experience also made him a capable leader, once serving as the sixteenth President of the United States, and a master of hand-to-hand fighting across many styles. His weaknesses are narrow but real: torn apart severely enough, he lapses into an inert state that needs outside help to recover, and the sheer span of his life has left him prone to psychological breakdowns and post-traumatic rage, most darkly in a future version who ruled Earth as a tyrant out of loneliness and despair.
