Personality

Hayato is a withdrawn child who spends most of his hours shut in his room and speaks to his parents so rarely that he prefers to monitor them through hidden electronic bugs; by his mother's account he has no real friends. Cornered, though, he proves remarkably brave, ready to take his own life to keep Bites the Dust from triggering, and even Josuke marvels at the boy's nerve when he volunteers to detonate the bomb planted in Okuyasu's body.

However strained things are with his mother, he loves her deeply, and his drive to stop Kira springs from a wish to protect her and Morioh. He is also strikingly clever, tricking Kira into announcing his own name aloud, arranging a phone call to summon Josuke without setting off Kira's Stand, and feeding Josuke vital deductions mid-battle even though he cannot perceive Stands himself.

History

Spying on his parents, Hayato notices unsettling things about the man posing as his father, Kosaku, in truth the killer Yoshikage Kira. His snooping nearly gets him killed by Stray Cat, but he manages to film Kira murdering a couple. When he tries to blackmail the killer with hidden evidence, an enraged Kira has Killer Queen strike him dead and dresses it up as an accidental fall. Moments later the Bow and Arrow pierces Kira, granting him Bites the Dust, a power that rewinds time and revives the freshly killed boy.

By the following morning, Kira is flaunting his new, 'invincible' ability and carelessly reveals his real name, and Hayato realizes he is trapped in a repeating day in which anyone who learns Kira's identity is killed, as Rohan Kishibe soon is. Understanding he can rely on no one else, Hayato steals Stray Cat to ambush Kira at close range; the plan falters, but his backup ploy brings Josuke and Okuyasu in time to hear Kira blurt out his name, canceling the loop.

In the climactic fight Hayato throws himself onto the mortally wounded Okuyasu to set off Kira's bomb, surviving only because Josuke reassembles his body with Crazy Diamond, then relays Kira's position from cover, never knowing that Yoshihiro Kira, tucked inside his jacket, is doing the very same for his own son. Hayato witnesses Kira's end and is last seen telling his mother, Shinobu, that he will keep waiting for his father's return, though he already knows the man is dead.
