The Crystal Star is the second transformation device Usagi Tsukino carries, a star-shaped compact that cradles the Silver Crystal and answers to Moon Crystal Power, Make Up. It powers her change into Sailor Moon throughout the Black Moon storyline across the manga, the 1990s anime, Crystal, and the stage musicals.
Following her first brooch, the Crystal Star becomes Usagi's next means of becoming Sailor Moon, with the Silver Crystal seated at its center. Its role runs through the Black Moon chapters of every major adaptation. Four gems on the casing stand for the Inner Guardians while the crescent at the middle marks Usagi herself, arranged with Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter set around the moon.
When Bandai brought the toy to North America it carried the name Miracle Romance Compact and shipped with a cosmetic dubbed Shining Moon Powder. A modified version of that same toy later stood in as the brooch for the unaired North American live-action pilot.
The compact keeps the Silver Crystal housed inside and drives the Moon Crystal Power, Make Up sequence. In the printed continuity Queen Serenity presents it to Usagi within the Chamber of Prayer after she reaches the Moon Castle, her earlier Transformation Brooch having broken apart once Queen Metalia fell. Usagi simply seats the Silver Crystal in the casing to bring it to life.
Beyond the change itself, the anime gave it a restorative side. Sailor Moon channels Moon Crystal Power through it to cleanse the Ayakashi Sisters, and she also tries, without success, to rouse Neo-Queen Serenity from her long sleep with it.
Sailor Moon is the sole owner. In the manga the item is undone during the closing clash with Death Phantom, after which Neo-Queen Serenity hands Usagi the Cosmic Heart Compact as its successor. The anime brought it into being when Usagi's shattered brooch fused with the Silver Crystal in episode 51. Its end there came during Sailor Moon S, when Mikuuji pinned Usagi and bit the compact, spoiling the crystal's power and cracking the casing. Her bond with Mamoru then transformed the ruined piece into the Cosmic Heart Compact, which she carried from that point on.
