Star Seed

A Star Seed is the crystalline spark that lives within all things that exist, whether a person, an asteroid, or a burning star. Every one of them springs from the same origin, the Galaxy Cauldron, the wellspring from which the entire universe is drawn. Newborn stars arrive with their own Star Seeds, and select seeds are dispatched to develop beside them, ripening over time into the Sailor Crystals that sit at the heart of a Guardian's abilities.

In its usual form the object reads as a faintly shining bead wrapped inside a clear crystal shaped like a six-sided double pyramid. If a lost carrier's seed is recovered, whether in the printed story or on screen, that individual can be restored to flesh and life.

The anime draws a line between two grades of seed. Ordinary humans hold a fragile version that flares only briefly when pulled out. During Sailor Stars, a golden blast from Galaxia's bracelets makes an orange bloom open above the target's chest or head, revealing the seed inside. Left uncovered too long, that light dims and the person collapses into a phage, a transformation many attribute to the dark energy woven into the Galactica Bracelets, which force living beings into a corrupted Guardian state serving Shadow Galactica.

By contrast, a True Star Seed never stops glowing. These belong to Sailor Guardians and, in the manga and Crystal, go by the name Sailor Crystals, standing apart from the plain seed a Guardian was also born with. Every planetary body in the galaxy answers to one such seed, carried by that world's Guardian, and it holds the might of the star it defends. Ripping a Guardian's True Star Seed free erases her entirely, a fate equal to death, as shown when the Sailor team fell in the series' late battles.

On screen, only three characters were confirmed to bear True Star Seeds: Tuxedo Mask, Sailor Moon, and Princess Kakyuu. Galaxia turned her hunt toward the remaining Guardians' seeds only near the finale. Usagi's is singled out by Galaxia as the purest and most radiant seed anywhere in the galaxy. Galaxia's own seed reached a kind of awareness, slipping into the shape of Chibi Chibi to approach Usagi, becoming the Sword of Sealing during the clash with Chaos Galaxia, and taking the form of a glowing pink butterfly to travel between worlds. In the manga, phages never exist, so the Animamates ignored ordinary people and chased the Guardians alone for their Sailor Crystals.
