The Apes were a notorious ghoul gang of the 20th Ward, recognizable by their gorilla masks and white parkas, who made their name under the Devil Ape by hunting down and killing powerful CCG investigators before Yoshimura eventually broke them up.
The Apes were an infamous gang operating out of the 20th Ward, easily spotted by their stylized gorilla masks and white parkas. Led by a figure known as the Devil Ape, they were a violent crew of ghouls who built their reputation on going after strong investigators.
The gang established itself by challenging and killing capable investigators, and its turf soon set it against a rival crew from the same district, the Black Dobers. Roughly ten years before the events of the series, Yoshimura dissolved the gang and took its leader on as a worker at Anteiku. The group reassembled one final time during the assault on the 20th Ward, throwing itself against the enormous investigator force sent to wipe out the cafe. Special Class Mougan Tanakamaru was dispatched against them, cutting down several members and gravely wounding their leader, and the survivors who fled underground to V14 were ambushed and annihilated by Kishou Arima.
The gang was headed by the Devil Ape, later revealed to be Enji Koma, who survived the massacre after Ken Kaneki rescued him. Koma went on to fight the CCG once more during the Rushima Landing Operation and afterward joined the organization Goat. Its ranks appear to have been made up almost entirely of male ghouls, a contrast to the largely female Black Dobers.

The Apes' turf in the 20th Ward overlapped with the Black Dobers, another local ghoul gang, and the two groups became rivals as a result.
Roughly ten years before the story's events, Yoshimura dissolved the Apes and took their leader on as a worker at Anteiku, effectively disbanding the gang.
