Stand Types

Stand Types organizes the enormous variety of Stands in the series into workable categories. The primary sorting is by ability, since knowing how an opponent's power functions is crucial in a fight, and a secondary sorting is by outward form. On top of the official groupings, fans and side material recognize a set of special categories that describe Stands whose behavior does not fit the standard boxes.

By ability, the broadest divide is range. Close-range types stay near their user but deliver strong, precise physical blows, making them power fighters that struggle against distant or hidden foes. Long-range types operate far from their user, sometimes kilometers away, and favor ambushes and precision over brute strength, leaving the user exposed if caught alone. Automatic types ignore their user's commands and act on preset instructions, often sparing the user from feedback damage; sub-groups include far-distance autopilots that track a single datum like temperature, and posthumous Stands that persist after their owner dies. A final ability group gathers Stands where range simply does not matter, such as those with space-time powers.

By appearance, Stands fall into five loose trends: natural humanoids that look organic and human, artificial humanoids with robotic or doll-like features, natural non-humanoids resembling animals or elements, artificial non-humanoids shaped like tools, weapons, or vehicles, and phenomenon types that are formless or too strange to place elsewhere. Most Stands borrow features from more than one trend, so these lists are treated as guidelines rather than firm compartments.

Beyond the official categories, several special kinds are widely recognized. Bound Stands attach to physical objects and can be seen by ordinary people. Colony Stands split into many independent units that divide both their power and their vulnerability. Evolved Stands change form through ACTs, the Arrow, the New Locacaca, or other means, with Requiem Stands as the most powerful outcome. Sentient Stands think and speak for themselves, shared Stands can pass between multiple users, and the Ultimate Stands of the JORGE JOESTAR novel are stronger copies created by Kars.
