Wonder of U

Wonder of U belongs to the enigmatic figure known as Toru and stands as the secondary villain of JoJolion. The Stand keeps two identities. Most of the time it masquerades as Satoru Akefu, the elderly head physician of TG University Hospital, appearing as a hunched man near ninety who leans on a cane and dresses in a bowler hat, gloves, scarf, and a coat studded with little sun-shaped buttons. That guise is usually shown from the rear, and the rare glimpses of its face reveal a monocle, braided hair, and small spikes ringing the mouth.

When it drops the human mask, the Stand rises to full height and swaps Akefu's features for a mechanical head that recalls a radio microphone, its eyes formed like tiny suns to match the coat buttons. Beneath the clothing sits a lean, jointed metal frame with blades mounted along each arm. As a personality it is talkative and openly menacing beneath a composed surface, fond of announcing its own name in conversation, and given to declaring that humanity has no right to possess anything. It prefers to stay out of a fight, leaning on rock insects to do its dirty work, and it will happily bait a foe into chasing it.

Ranked among the strongest Stands in the whole saga, Wonder of U wins out against a long list of powerful opponents and even keeps working after its master has died. Although it operates on its own, Toru retains a thread of direct command over it, letting him effectively occupy two spots at once; while he pilots it his gaze turns dull and vacant. The Stand also handles its cane with real skill, batting away a storm of frozen bubbles and turning aside a pinpoint shot.

Its defining power is Calamity. Anyone who chases Toru or his Akefu persona, or even merely forms the wish or resolve to hunt them down later, becomes marked for a run of disasters. The intent has to be genuine rather than accidental. Akefu had to draw an explicit threat out of a reporter before the Stand could strike him dead, whereas hundreds of people who gathered simply to hear a lecture went untouched. Crucially, if a person maneuvers so that Toru or the Stand ends up pursuing them instead, the ability stays dormant, which is the one safe way to approach.

A calamity always works by turning the surrounding environment against its victim, who then absorbs wildly excessive harm from impacts while nobody else in the vicinity is affected. Objects the Stand touches directly can be loaded with this destructive charge to seed extra hazards, and should a target survive one incident, another arrives soon after. The results have ranged from a tripped umbrella stand shattering both of Rai Mamezuku's legs, to a flicked cigarette butt piercing Josuke's hand, to rain falling with the force of gunfire, to a stray airplane fragment plunging toward Yasuho from ten kilometers up. It can even warp the equivalent exchange of the Locacaca serum so that drinking it nearly suffocates the user. When no loose object is handy, the Stand instead twists the behavior of bystanders, once making a patient lunge at Josuke and snapping the man's own neck sideways when the attack was blocked.

A target leaves the danger queue only by dying or by genuinely abandoning the urge to pursue. Because the Stand is essentially the concept of disaster given form, it survives Toru's death, continuing to act as a being spun from what Yasuho calls calamity energy, making it the second Stand built from a supernatural force after Ball Breaker. On top of all this it slips freely in and out of the Akefu disguise, teleports at will between distant sites such as the hospital and the Higashikata home, and skims quickly along flat reflective surfaces.

The Stand answers to Toru, the soft-spoken young man who orchestrates the Locacaca conspiracy from behind the Akefu identity. Prizing the Locacaca 6251 medicine and its enormous value, he uses Wonder of U to shield his research and to eliminate anyone who threatens to uncover it, all while rarely dirtying his own hands.
