Smokey Brown

Still in his teens, Smokey stands a touch shorter than average and carries a medium frame. His skin is dark, and a flat cap resting on his head serves as his signature accessory.

Warm and even-tempered, Smokey makes for easy company. Because he is an ordinary person suddenly surrounded by monsters and Ripple warriors, the supernatural chaos orbiting Joseph regularly leaves him wide-eyed and shaken.

Smokey enters the story by lifting Joseph's wallet, only to be cornered and roughed up by two crooked policemen who try to squeeze money out of him. Joseph steps in and drops both officers with the Ripple, and a friendship quickly takes root. Over a restaurant meal with Joseph and Erina, a mafia thug insults Smokey over his ethnicity, and Joseph swiftly puts the man in his place.

For most of Battle Tendency he lingers on the sidelines, reacting with alarm to Joseph's stunts and to the horrors of the Pillar Men, a role that echoes Speedwagon's in the opening arc. Near the climax he stands beside Speedwagon to watch Joseph confront Kars, and tries in vain to shout that Lisa Lisa is Joseph's mother. He attends Joseph's staged funeral and shares everyone's astonishment when Joseph turns out to be alive.

The epilogue reveals that Smokey saves up enough to attend college, majors in political science, and eventually becomes the first African-American to serve as mayor of his Georgia hometown. Anime-only material extends this thread: he pays his respects at Erina Joestar's deathbed in 1950, and a Stardust Crusaders charity concert flyer credits him as a sponsoring New York City mayor.
