Burst

Burst is a conjectural label for an ability shown by one of the Near High-End Nomu, since the story never names it. It is filed as an Emitter Quirk with long-range reach, and it enters the manga in Chapter 332 before appearing on screen in Episode 140.

What distinguishes it from other destructive powers is who pulls the trigger. The detonation happens on command from an outside party, which places Burst in a small and unsettling family of abilities.

Activation converts the wielder into an explosion, releasing a wave of brilliant light. Since the body itself is the payload, there is no second attempt. Whatever the Nomu was before, it does not persist afterward.

The similarities to other detonating powers run deep. All For One quietly handed Lady Nagant a Self-Destruct ability, and the Bombers use Self-Detonation. All three fire on someone else's say-so and leave the host wrecked, and all three trace back to All For One, which raises the possibility that they are variants or manufactured copies of one power. There is a competing reading worth noting. Neither Lady Nagant's blast nor the winged Near High-End's is ever confirmed to come from a Quirk those two actually held. The explosions may instead have been triggered by abilities belonging to All For One and "Tomura Shigaraki" respectively, working the way Landmine does on an outside target.

A Near High-End Nomu is the sole demonstrated case. Having absorbed the worst of the Tiamat missile barrage, it receives the order to detonate from "Tomura Shigaraki," and its remaining fragments blow apart. The blast serves two purposes at once, drawing the fighter pilots' attention and creating the opening "Tomura" needs to blindside Star and Stripe.
