Electrification

Registered as a close-range Emitter Quirk, Electrification lets Denki Kaminari bank electricity inside his body and release it as a live shroud. It arrives in Chapter 16 and in Episode 8 of the anime. Supplementary material notes that electric powers of this sort command high value in the job market, which is part of why heroes who possess them stay uncommon.

Switching the Quirk on wraps Denki in a charge that jolts anyone making contact and leaves them slightly paralyzed. Push the output high enough and the release becomes automatic and omnidirectional, catching everyone close by whether they touch him or not. A flood of light comes along as a byproduct. The same conductive property runs in reverse, letting him behave like a lightning rod and swallow incoming electrical attacks.

Its problems start with reach. The Quirk is built for close quarters and does poorly at distance, and while he can crank the voltage for a wide blast, he has no innate way to steer the surplus, which endangers his own teammates and pushes him toward his ceiling.

Cross that ceiling and his brain short-circuits. He turns witless for roughly an hour, unable to fire the Quirk or accomplish much of anything, retaining only faint awareness of his surroundings. In that condition he is trivially beaten, captured, or taken hostage. Insulating material blunts him too, and opponents whose powers refuse to conduct give him trouble, whether that means plant-based Quirks like Vines or rival electric types.

Denki Kaminari is the sole owner. Because he cannot aim what he releases, he holds back often in team fights, and under real pressure he sometimes panics and lets loose on reflex, an involuntary blast catalogued as Human Stun Gun. Support-course inventor Mei Hatsume, working under Power Loader, addressed the aiming problem by adding Sharpshooting Gear to his costume: projectiles that stick to surfaces and draw his current along a single line, a technique named Target Electo. Outside combat he charges electronics, from the radio headset in his hero costume to ordinary batteries, standing in for a conventional power source. During the Forest Training Camp Arc he pushed his output into a battery of high capacity, raising the volume he could safely carry.

His signature move is Indiscriminate Shock 1.3 Million Volts, a blanket discharge first turned on the League of Villains, with a two-million-volt version seen in film that fries his brain that much faster. Electromagnetic Rail Gun pairs him with Momo Yaoyorozu, who builds the weapon using Creation while he supplies the power to launch the projectile. One ambition he has not yet reached is shaping his electricity into a blade.
