Quirk Apprehension Test Arc

Running only three chapters and two anime episodes, this is the second story arc of My Hero Academia and the second inside the U.A. Beginnings Saga. It picks up where the entrance exam left off and hands the class over to the Battle Trial.

Its subject is measurement. Shota Aizawa takes charge of Class 1-A and puts every student's Quirk under a stopwatch, using a lie as leverage to force honest effort out of teenagers who think school is a game.

All Might meets Izuku Midoriya at the cleared-up Takoba Municipal Beach Park to congratulate him on his acceptance, cautioning that One For All still needs adjusting before it can be handled properly. Spring arrives, and Izuku walks into his classroom hoping neither Katsuki Bakugo nor the boy in glasses landed in it. Both did. Tenya Ida introduces himself and concedes that Izuku read the practical exam correctly, and Ochaco Uraraka arrives soon after, glad he made it in. Then a man in the doorway names himself Shota Aizawa, claims the homeroom, and orders everyone into gym clothes.

At the P.E. Grounds he announces a Quirk Apprehension Test, since middle school never permitted these students to use their powers. When the class treats a trial pitch as entertainment, he adds a condition: whoever finishes last on total points is hopeless and leaves that day. The events run through a sprint, grip strength, a standing long jump, a sideways jump, and finally the pitch. Izuku's throw fizzles because Shota has erased the Quirk mid-motion, exposing himself as the Erasing Hero, Eraser Head. He argues that a power leaving its wielder crippled and dependent on rescue is no basis for heroism, then grants a second attempt. Izuku channels everything through a single fingertip, sends the ball out of sight, scores enormously, and then stands up unaided, quietly disproving the lecture.

Katsuki, convinced Izuku concealed a Quirk from him for years, charges and is stopped mid-lunge by the Capturing Weapon. Once scores are posted, Shota admits the threat of expulsion was invented, a rational ruse to drag everyone's best out of them, and packs Izuku off to Recovery Girl. All Might calls him a liar, noting he really did cut an entire class the year before, and Shota answers that Izuku sits above the zero mark for now, and anyone who dips below it can go at any time.

Izuku keeps his place at U.A. and comes away with a more efficient way to release One For All. Katsuki, now certain his childhood rival has a Quirk and lied about it for years, grows angrier still. The first day closes with Izuku, Ochaco, and Tenya becoming friends, and the next brings All Might into the classroom as their Foundational Heroics instructor, with the Trial of Battle announced as their first assignment.

Much of Class 1-A is introduced here, along with Shoto Todoroki and Lunch Rush. Two Quirks receive their first explanation: Erasure, which nullifies another person's power on sight, and Frog, which lets Tsuyu Asui do anything a frog can.
