Appearance

The tail is the obvious feature, bare along its whole length except at the tip, where the hair matches the blond on his head. That hair is short and pushed forward. His eyes are thin and carry no lower lashes, and he is visibly muscular.

The school uniform is the standard male set: a blazer in light gray trimmed with dark turquoise, a white dress shirt beneath it, trousers in dark blue-green, and a red tie. He swaps the usual brown dress shoes for pale gray sneakers.

His hero costume is a plain karate gi tied with a black belt and blue fittings, fur lining part of the left side of the collar in the same shade as his hair, worn with black boots accented in light blue. Blue fingerless gloves join it ahead of the Provisional Hero License Exam. The winter variant, worn for the Joint Training Battle, adds a long black sleeved shirt under the gi, lines both collar sides with fur, and swaps the blue gloves for black.

Eight years past the Final War he has grown taller, wearing the hair shorter now and pushed back. A small scar in the shape of a cross marks his left cheek, and the tuft on his tail is trimmed down. The costume inverts, every white surface turned black, the gloves gone, with black headphones over each ear for communications.

Personality

Calm, noble, and carrying a deep sense of dignity, Mashirao cannot accept a result unless his own ability produced it. Sources describe him as a hard worker rather than a natural.

Alongside that dignity runs a sheepish streak. He rarely enjoys the spotlight and embarrasses easily, though he is humble, reliable, and focused once hero work starts. The running joke that others find him plain genuinely upsets him, which shows how sensitive and self-conscious he is about both his personality and his abilities. He startles readily, whether at Ochaco punching herself in the face or at the size of the sword Eri receives at the Christmas party his class throws.

He will sometimes drape his tail over a shoulder, presumably to take its weight off his lower body, and in the manga he wags it when something excites him.

Abilities

Tail gives him a long, powerful, sturdy limb that works as a third arm: it grabs, it wraps around enemies, it hits hard enough to break metal objects, and it supports his full body weight. Slapping it down hard against the earth launches him upward, which turns obstacles at ground level into non-issues and underpins his speed and mobility. What he adds is martial arts, producing fast, acrobatic close-range work that took 7th place for him in the Quirk Apprehension Test with a 50-meter dash of 5.49 seconds. Training against a hardened Eijiro Kirishima steadily raised the strength and durability of the Quirk itself.

Ectoplasm identified the flaw: tailed people move in readable patterns, and Mashirao fought predictably, so he rebuilt the fundamentals of his movement to break the habit. His ultimate moves are Tornado Tail Dance, a mid-air spin that strikes everything within reach, first used to destroy Pony Tsunotori's remote-controlled horns, and Fist of the Tail: Swamp Smack Spin, a defensive horizontal spin with the tail extended that repels anything nearby, first used to escape Juzo Honenuki's Softening.

At the U.S.J. he defeated several low-tier League of Villains members single-handedly. In round three of the Joint Training Battle he held against Sen Kaibara until Tenya Ida arrived, then successfully ambushed Pony Tsunotori, Class 1-B's fastest student, before Juzo liquefied the ground beneath them; freed by Mezo Shoji, he was blindsided and captured by the restrained Pony anyway. Shishido, the No. 13 Pro Hero, took him on as an intern and sharpened both his flurries of attacks and his ability to read ahead of a situation.

On Nabu Island he was first among his classmates to face Chimera, aided briefly by Fumikage Tokoyami and then holding out alone until Fumikage came back with reinforcements, at which stage the villain soundly overcame him. The next day he and Kyoka Jiro made up the fourth defensive line facing Nine, ambushing him effectively before Hydra subdued them both, then joined Mezo against him and forced Nine to use Air Wall at full power to put the three of them down.

His head is good too. He placed 8th in the midterms. He was the one who worked out that Hitoshi Shinso had used Brainwashing on him along with Nirengeki Shoda and Yuga Aoyama, and though he did not yet understand the mechanism he knew that speaking with the boy from Class 1-C played a part, which is why he withdrew from the Sports Festival and warned Izuku Midoriya off. He measured Sen's drill-amplified attacks and concluded countering or blocking them was useless, and he deduced that pinning Pony's horns in place stopped Horn Cannon from firing them.

Eight years on, having graduated alongside his classmates, he stands as the No. 32 Pro Hero.
