Tenya Ida

Engines are the first thing to notice, because they are built into him. Tenya's calves swell into the shape of automobile motors, six silver exhaust pipes rising from each leg in two columns of three, and the mufflers he later grows to replace the originals run longer, sit differently, and tuck back into the flesh when he wants them gone. Above the legs he is tall, broad, and heavily built, his jaw pointed and his eyes squared to match, blue on screen and red in early manga printings before shifting to gold. Rectangular glasses, a permanent frown, and eyebrows that hook sharply inward complete a face that almost never relaxes. His dark blue hair lies flat with a part on the right and a patch shaved low at the back.

School means the standard U.A. kit: a gray blazer trimmed in dark turquoise, white shirt, red tie, blue-green trousers, brown shoes. Hero work means a dark blue bodysuit with a high collar under white plating, a chest piece, guards at the throat and upper arms, and vambraces that taper to points past his elbows. The full helmet whites out his eyes, vents its lower half with holes so he can breathe and speak, curves over the crown with a hole on each side, and carries two swept horns plus a rear spike. White boots reach his knees with gold fittings tuned to his Quirk, and the three metal pipes strapped around his torso do nothing whatsoever. The suit is light and shields him poorly, since its real purpose is cutting drag.

Hosu leaves a scar on his left shoulder where Stain's blade went in. Later, after Class 1-A wrecks the suit fighting Izuku Midoriya, Mei Hatsume rebuilds it: the helmet gets sleeker with a retracting upper half, the chestplate sharpens and grows spikes off the shoulders, a back plate and vented gauntlets appear, and the shin armor slims down almost to nothing. He hands pieces of that armor to Shoto Todoroki during the Final War to move him out of Kamino and into the Gunga Mountains, a run that blows the mufflers off his pipes entirely; they regrow across his remaining school years. Graduation brings slicked-back hair, and eight years on he is taller and thicker with new glasses, a simplified suit that packs down into a briefcase, and a helmet braced twice at the neck with horns above and a point at the front.

The severity is a surface. Under it Tenya is earnest, disciplined, sharp, and thoroughly decent, if slightly lost in ordinary conversation thanks to a privileged upbringing. His body betrays the intensity constantly, chopping his arms through the air in odd patterns or twitching outright, while his expression stays locked.

He takes everything at maximum weight and has a habit of deciding what happened, then acting loudly on that decision. He concluded Izuku had cracked the entrance exam's hidden criteria, which Izuku had not, and has held him in high regard ever since. Given a training exercise he throws himself into the part, hero or villain, with theatrical commitment meant to make it feel real. He studies relentlessly, on topic and off. As class representative he demands order from classmates who find him exhausting, and treats their safety in a crisis as his personal responsibility, cutting panic short and steering bystanders.

What redeems the rigidity is honesty about his own failures. After hunting Stain out of pure vengeance for Tensei, breaking rules he would normally die defending, he admitted the behavior had nothing to do with heroism and left his ruined left hand unhealed as a reminder. Being manipulated offends him; Mei Hatsume turning their Sports Festival match into an infomercial infuriated him. Pride in the Ida name drives him, and admiration for his brother drives him harder. When Katsuki Bakugo was taken, Tenya argued hardest for leaving the rescue to professionals, ambushed his friends at night to stop them, and punched Izuku out of fury before relenting and proving essential to the rescue anyway.

Time softens him without dulling the scolding. Izuku shapes him most; when Izuku went rogue it was Tenya's hand that reached him and Tenya's mouth that fed Izuku's own line back to him: unrequested help is what defines a real hero. Eight years later, ranked and mature, he tells lower-placed classmates that a reformed Hero Billboard Chart makes rankings a poor measure of worth, breaks up an argument between Izuku and Katsuki over who reached a runaway driver first by pointing out that it was not a race, and tours elementary schools with Ochaco Uraraka, Tsuyu Asui, and Momo Yaoyorozu for her Quirk counselling program. He also gets the thing he wanted most: Tensei walks again, Tenya runs Team Idaten, and the brothers work the same office, known for finding lost kids.

Engine puts motors in both calves, which is where the speed and the kicking power come from, and orange juice is what fuels them. The exhaust ports have to stay clear for the Quirk to run properly, and the engines shift through gears, more than three of them. Long-distance running built the legs and lungs behind the numbers: fifty meters in 3.04 seconds in third gear, averaging 51.29 kilometers per hour across the dash, with a ceiling well beyond that.

He placed sixth in the entrance exam with the second-most villain points, fourth in the Quirk Apprehension Test, and fourth at the Sports Festival, where third was his had he stayed for the ceremony. Metal buckles under his kicks. Ibara Shiozaki went down quickly against him, and Shoto Todoroki nearly did before freezing his mufflers and burying him in ice. Izuku trained specifically to keep pace with him; Shoto simply cannot.

Against Stain, rage nearly got him killed. Once Izuku and Shoto arrived and he let the vengeance go, he fought far better, and Shoto's help unlocked Recipro Extend, which pinned the Hero Killer down. Pixie-Bob counted him among Class 1-A's stronger students afterward. His brother's advice, a family secret involving tearing out his mufflers so tougher ones would grow, turned ten seconds of Recipro into ten minutes and made him faster than Gran Torino, one of the quickest heroes alive; Juzo Honenuki, a recommended student, was overwhelmed into retreat. By the Paranormal Liberation War he could steer Recipro Turbo properly, and alongside Katsuki, Mirio Togata, and Nejire Hado he held multiple Near High-End Nomu at bay for a long stretch and walked away with minor wounds. In the Final War he carried Shoto to the Gunga Mountains at Mach 3, covering the distance from Kamino in under ten minutes.

His finishers stack in order of desperation: Engine Boost for acceleration, Recipro Burst for ten seconds of violence that leaves the engines dead afterward, Recipro Extend once he cools that penalty off, Recipro Turbo for ten sustained minutes quicker than either and faster even than Jet, and Maximum Speed, a full charge released at once that beats Turbo. Intelligence matches the legs. He was second in his class's midterms, spotted that the entrance exam had criteria nobody mentioned, and mapped Stain's pattern across seven locations with at least four heroes struck in each to predict Hosu. He weaponized Shoto's old muffler-freezing trick against Stain, and beat Power Loader in the final exam by hauling Mashirao Ojiro on his back through the traps and then slingshotting him at the gate with Recipro Extend. He calms stampedes. He took the class presidency when Izuku resigned and handed it over as better suited. His gear helps too: the Ingenium Boots cool and tune the engines to stretch his range, the helmet cuts wind, and the muffler is jewelry.
