Yuga Aoyama

Long lashes and bright indigo eyes, drawn light blue in the manga, lend Yuga the look of a storybook prince. His face is delicate, his build slight, and his blond hair lies flat across most of his head, then flares into spikes low at the sides, and a side fringe curls upward before dropping again.

The hero costume layers metallic lavender armor with gold accents over a black bodysuit: a chest plate collared in a Greek fret pattern, round shoulder pads, vambraces, knee-high boots. A glittering indigo cape trails behind, and his belt closes with a gold ring buckle set with a blue crystal, the emitter his Quirk fires through, matched by smaller stones at his shoulders and knees. A red-tinted visor shaped like a wing covers his eyes.

He fights the Final War out of costume, in a high-collared black jacket buttoned along the right side with a strap at his midsection, the support belt hidden underneath. Eight years later the suit returns toned down: the visor loses its wing shape, the gold is dialed back, the shoulder pads and trousers become striped fabric, the shoulder crystals are gone while his knees turn gold, and his fringe is much shorter.

The version of Yuga his classmates meet first is a preening one. He rates himself above every other student in Class 1-A, especially where Quirks are concerned, poses constantly, chases attention he rarely gets, and holds the same closed smile whether he is talking or being hurt. Interruptions and questions upset him, his sentences trail off into a star (☆), and he sprinkles French through his speech to play up the heritage he claims.

The act covers guilt. He wants friends but seldom finds the nerve to reach for them, and what reads as creepiness is usually a genuine attempt at kindness. Believing himself a despicable villain for the danger he put everyone in, he ate alone and avoided company. He is observant all the same, spotting Ochaco Uraraka's feelings for Izuku Midoriya before she recognized them herself, and he sympathized with Izuku as two boys saddled with powers that hurt their own users.

Underneath he is decent. He offered up his own shot at a provisional license so Tenya Ida could pass, and after leaking the training camp location he still went after Fumikage Tokoyami and came within reach of Katsuki Bakugo. Once the truth surfaced, his classmates and Shota Aizawa refused to treat him as a villain, calling him a victim of circumstance and asking him to earn forgiveness by helping. Allowed to stay, he left the school anyway by his own choice, promising the friends who threw him a farewell party that he would stand beside them one day.

Yuga was born without a Quirk. Being different frightened his parents more than it frightened him, and their fear of the discrimination waiting for him drove the Aoyama family to All For One, who handed over Navel Laser. The gift arrived as a debt. Yuga became a double agent under threat of death, and most of the League of Villains' encounters with Class 1-A trace back to what he passed along, including the U.S.J. and the relocated summer camp.

Navel Laser fires a sparkling beam from his stomach strong enough to punch through two meters of concrete, and anything past one second of firing wrecks his intestines. A Quirkless body was never meant to hold it, so he had almost no control and wore a special belt to compensate, blaming the weakness on a birth defect. U.A. training blunted that: repeated firing built his endurance, extended his range, and taught him to shoot through the pain, and by the Provisional Hero License Exam he could hold the beam past a second. The recoil doubles as propulsion, and he can reshape and resize the beams.

All For One eventually ordered him to lure Izuku out, which is how his devastated classmates found him out. Working with Hitoshi Shinso, Yuga sold the villain a second betrayal, delivered Izuku, then turned on him in an ambush. Against Kunieda he came close to death by plant Quirk, and his power Awakened under the pressure, the light strong enough to glitch Toru Hagakure's Invisibility; the wild beam he fired was a setup, letting Toru redirect it to finish the villain. Afterward he suspended his studies to atone, turned himself in, re-enrolled in a hero program, and eight years later works as a Pro Hero and sidekick to Toru.
