Summary

Waiting for the practical to open, the applicants gawk at the sheer scale of the training ground. Izuku spots Ochaco Uraraka, the girl who caught him earlier that day, and means to thank her, but Tenya Ida, who had already scolded him for muttering during the briefing, warns him off distracting her. Around them, other candidates have written him off entirely.

The exam starts without warning and the crowd surges through the gates ahead of him. A one-point robot corners Izuku almost immediately, and Yuga Aoyama's navel laser destroys it before he moves on to easier targets. Scrambling for anything left, Izuku finds the field already stripped clean, while the judging panel above discusses what they are really measuring: speed, strength, and a calm head.

With the clock nearly gone and his score still at zero, a zero-point machine the size of a building rises up. Everyone scatters and Izuku freezes, until the thing's rampage buries Ochaco under rubble and it begins closing on her. Adrenaline moves him. One For All fires for the first time, and he leaps up to smash the robot apart. The other applicants stare; the judges take note of the self-sacrifice.

Key Events

The cost arrives at once. Both legs and his right arm break under his own borrowed power, and he falls, trying to soften the landing with a Quirk he cannot control. Ochaco catches him before impact. The practical is called just as he blacks out, which frustrates him more than the injuries do. Applicants nearby marvel at his Quirk and wonder whether the weakness was an act to fool them; only Tenya reads the moment correctly, asking whether Izuku understood all along that rescuing someone might factor into the scoring. Recovery Girl, U.A.'s nurse and a Pro Hero, arrives to mend him.

A week later the results arrive as a hologram inside an envelope, delivered by All Might, who apologizes for the silence and announces that he is joining U.A.'s teaching staff. Izuku's written score was fine and his practical score was zero, which he takes hard. Then the recording plays Ochaco asking Present Mic to hand her own points to the boy who saved her. The judges were never counting only kills. Rescue points existed all along for heroic acts during the test, and the sixty Izuku earned are far more than enough to pass.

Notes

Adapts the back half of Chapter 3 and all of Chapter 4. Several exam moments are expanded, including how Ochaco and Tenya rack up their own points. The judges appear only as silhouettes on the page, while the anime shows Nezu, Cementoss, and Ectoplasm somewhat more clearly. Recovery Girl's candy is Haribo brand in the manga and goes unnamed here.
