Summary

Yuga's question about Izuku rattles Ochaco enough that she loses her grip on the railing and sails toward Thirteen, who has to cut the Black Hole rather than kill a student. The lapse hands Ochaco an opening she fills with the martial arts she learned under Gunhead, pinning the rescue hero long enough for Yuga to pile on and get the cuffs on.

Nezu takes Denki and Mina apart without ever touching them. Expecting a small, frail opponent they can simply shock, the two instead find him working a crane from a safe distance and toppling buildings whose collapse he has already calculated down the chain. Every route to the gate closes except one, and the clock expires before either student grasps what was happening, exposing how helpless they are against an opponent who thinks.

Kyoka and Koji then run into Present Mic, whose Voice is effectively her Earphone Jack perfected. Sound waves pin them in the forest, her ears bleed, and Koji, terrified of insects, flees rather than call on the one thing that could work. Remembering his entrance exam and what Plus Ultra is supposed to mean, he faces the fear and sends bugs at Present Mic from underground where the noise cannot reach, swarming him under. Recovery Girl is unimpressed that a colleague lost to vermin.

Key Events

Snipe corners Mezo and Toru among pillars in a smoke-filled corridor, blowing apart their cover with gunfire. Toru strips out of her costume, and Mezo, reading the plan instantly, offers himself as bait so an unseen Toru can slip in and cuff the marksman.

Midnight's match against Hanta and Minoru looks like a rout: Hanta is put to sleep saving his partner at the opening bell, and Minoru flees screaming about how unfair the pairing is. Recovery Girl suggests U.A. may be the wrong place for a boy with no long-term ambition. The flight is theater, however. As a longtime fan of Midnight, Minoru knows her Quirk, has deliberately drawn her far from the gate, and has Hanta's tape sealed over his face to block the scent. When her whip comes down he answers with Grape Rush, gluing hero and weapon to the ground, then hauls the unconscious Hanta through the exit. Recovery Girl retracts her judgment.

Ochaco turns up in the monitoring room dodging Tsuyu's questions about what Yuga said to her. She turns to tell Izuku his turn has come and finds he has already gone. He reaches his stage to find Katsuki waiting in silence, neither of them saying a word as their bout with All Might approaches.

Notes

Adapted from the end of Chapter 64, the back half of Chapter 66, and the middle of Chapter 67. The anime shows Mezo and Toru's fight with Snipe in full where the manga offered only its conclusion, and changes their victory to a capture rather than a run through the gate. Ochaco's flustered visit to the monitoring room, where she makes excuses in front of Izuku, is new. Minoru takes a deep breath after tearing the tape away; on the page he throws up instead.
