Chapter 189

The two Nomu dropped near Hawks go down easily, and he is relieved they were nothing special. Word reaches him that nine more are loose, so he tells the other professionals to break into groups and run them down. His attention keeps drifting back to the main fight. High-End scans the wreckage for anyone worth its time and finds nobody. A news helicopter narrates the scene overhead, pros scrambling against Nomu while the country's newly crowned number one lies flat, and likens it to what happened in Kamino Ward three months earlier.

Endeavor is not finished. Barely conscious, he rockets himself at the creature and lets loose a stream of fire. It slips the attack and swats him through a building. Seeing that, the other heroes shift their priority to clearing civilians out. From the back of a taxi, Fuyumi and Natsuo follow the broadcast on a computer, and Natsuo cannot understand why the man will not withdraw and call for backup, given he long ago conceded he would never be All Might. That concession is exactly what made him abandon his own climb and start a family to produce a successor instead. Fuyumi answers that stubbornness is the whole of their father, and he will not quit.

Civilians shove each other trying to flee while heroes work to settle the panic. At U.A., Class 1-A watches the collapse on television, Shoto still stunned at how easily his father is losing. Then one man in the crowd starts shouting at everyone not to write Endeavor off so quickly, since he is bleeding on their behalf. High-End moves toward the mass of people, with Endeavor on its heels. Sight blurred and body torn open, he refuses to fold and fixes on a complete victory, one that means outpacing the creature's reflexes.

Hawks drops in and throws feathers at the Nomu's face, slicing away the hood and exposing what is underneath. He then packs feathers against Endeavor's back to accelerate him, thinking that of every hero alive only this man ever genuinely tried to climb past All Might. The added speed carries Endeavor ahead of High-End. His flames catch the feathers alight, the burning silhouette reads as a phoenix, and he reaches the creature's face ready to incinerate it.

Three months are established as having passed since All Might's rematch with All For One. Endeavor abandons his original intention of taking High-End alive for interrogation and commits to killing it instead. Encouragement from a single bystander spreads through the crowd into open cheering, which hands Endeavor a second wind, and Hawks' feathers supply the speed his overheated body no longer has.

Fifteen pages, published July 2, 2018 in issue 31 and collected in volume 21, with Episode 88 covering it. Hawks and a Nomu appear on the cover. The chapter moves between Fukuoka and U.A. High School, and its cast includes Fuyumi, Natsuo, Shoto, most of Class 1-A, Aizawa, and the bystander Hiroshi Tameda, with All Might appearing only in fantasy. Featured Quirks run to Hellflame and Fierce Wings on the hero side, with Shoulder-Mounted Jets, Muscle Augmentation, Power, Transforming Arms, and Super Regeneration on the Nomu's. Horikoshi's author comment reports a surprise gift of lunar property registered under Bakugo's name.
