Quaotic Quirkstravaganza

The finish of round one turns on a deception the audience only understands after the fact. Tsuyu has smeared her mucus over Hitoshi and Denki, wiping out the individual scents Jurota depends on so that all three read as a single frog-smelling target as they close in. Watching the feed, Minoru and Izuku work it out by recalling what Tsuyu once said about her own Quirk during the U.S.J. attack.

Denki's pointer support item is stuck on Jurota, and that marker is the only fix the trio has on the enemy position. Ibara answers by pushing a thick growth of vines toward them, and Hiryu soon spots the tracker. She reels Denki in and buries him inside a shell of layered vines that insulate her team from his current. Denki tries to funnel a discharge through a narrow gap in the shell, but Hiryu knocks the pointer loose with his Scales an instant before the shot lands, and Ibara seals him in completely.

Losing Denki was the whole idea. With Ibara's vine supply spent on the sphere, Hitoshi borrows Hiryu's voice through his artificial vocal cords, and she answers a command that was never hers to follow. Jurota, having been fooled once, refuses to reply in words at all and only gestures vaguely toward the enemy. Hiryu fires scales at Ibara hoping to snap her out of it, but Tsuyu's tongue drags her clear first.

Tsuyu boots Jurota away before he can name her as the biggest threat. He instead tracks Hitoshi by the movement of the two matching scents and claws through a cramped run of pipes to reach him. A pipe dropped on his skull with Eraser Head Style: Binding Cloth Manipulation barely slows him. Tsuyu saves her teammate by flinging Hiryu at the beast; Hiryu yells for him to move, Jurota assumes it is the voice changer again, and the two heads slam together hard enough to knock both of them cold.

Hitoshi, Denki, Tsuyu, and a still-brainwashed Ibara drag the pair to the jail. From the stands, Minoru and Izuku credit Hitoshi's ability and the quick thinking that let his inexperienced Quirk carry the round. Hitoshi shrugs off the praise and says he intends to reach the pros on his own strength.

Round one of the Joint Training Battle reaches its conclusion, and the win goes to Class 1-A.

Tsuyu's mucus is revealed as a scent mask that defeats Jurota's Beast-enhanced sense of smell, a callback to her explanation at the U.S.J.

Denki's capture is exposed as a planned sacrifice designed to exhaust Ibara's vine output and open a window for Hitoshi and Tsuyu.

Hitoshi brainwashes Ibara by imitating Hiryu with his artificial vocal cords, and the same trust problem later causes Jurota to ignore a real warning, knocking both him and Hiryu unconscious.

Serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 41 of 2018 on September 10, running fifteen pages and later collected in volume 21. The chapter falls inside the Joint Training arc and was adapted as Episode 92 of the anime.

The cover assembles both teams and their onlookers, among them Ibara Shiozaki, Jurota Shishida, Hiryu Rin, Setsuna Tokage, Hitoshi Shinso, Denki Kaminari, Tsuyu Asui, Izuku Midoriya, and Minoru Mineta. Action stays entirely within Ground Gamma at U.A. High School.

Kohei Horikoshi's author comment for the issue is a tribute to Sakura Sensei, thanking them for their manga and wishing them rest in peace.
