Summary

The chapter opens in the past. Not long after clearing the Provisional Hero License Exam, Tenya visits his recovering brother, and Tensei raises the idea that the younger Ida's engines are due for what their family calls tuning. The procedure means tearing out the mufflers set in the calves, an agony that pays off later when better ones grow back and performance climbs. Tenya went through with it in the run-up to the Joint Training Battle.

That explains Recipro Turbo. Tenya tears loose from the hardened ground Juzo Honenuki buried him in, and although the new gear is barely under his control, the speed is enough to chase Juzo off; the 1-B student liquefies the earth with Softening and swims clear. With that threat gone for the moment, Tenya goes hunting for his teammates.

Watching the footage, Izuku reckons the technique outpaces even Gran Torino. Mina, Ochaco, Hanta and Kyoka follow along and spot Mashirao Ojiro losing an ordinary brawl to Sen Kaibara, whose fingers carry brutally hard support gear that makes each drilling strike a real danger. Before Sen can connect again, Tenya blurs past, scoops him up and deposits him in the 1-B holding cage. Asked why he would intrude on a one-on-one exchange, Tenya answers that Tensei would have stepped in just the same, and that a habit meant for real rescue work has to be practiced here too.

The other fight is going worse. Tetsutetsu punches straight through Shoto's ice with Steel Fist, and Katsuki, watching, mutters that the flames are the obvious answer. Shoto reaches the same conclusion and throws a wall of fire, which drives Pony and her horns back but only leaves Tetsutetsu glowing red. He explains that living inside a hearth built his heat tolerance, grabs Shoto, and tells him half-measures in either temperature will get him nowhere. As Tetsutetsu works to choke him out, Shoto hears his father's voice about pushing past his ceiling on the fire side.
