Summary

Inside the tower, Re-Destro lays out why Deika City suits his purposes: buried in the mountains, hard to enter, harder to leave. Bound and unimpressed, Giran tells him he has made two errors. He has no intention of playing the captive maiden, and the moment the League turns a Nomu loose, the town's calm evaporates.

Re-Destro dismisses the Nomu threat on three counts. None have surfaced since the Kamino Incident. The high-powered specimen that appeared in Kyushu only ever produced inferior white models. And Dabi was under orders to recover that specimen. From this he concludes the League's access is finite, a direct consequence of All For One sitting in a cell.

In the streets, the League scatters as it grapples with the Army's warriors. Spinner is impressed despite himself by how well trained they are. Curious explains that these people have sharpened body and mind for the cause, and that it grates on her to watch a group with no ideology and no banner soak up so much attention.

Her interest settles on Himiko Toga, and she asks for an interview. The story of a girl who lost her mind fascinates her. Himiko lunges; the warriors around Curious intercept.

Himiko is thrown into a bar, and Curious tells her to mind her footing before a small blast goes off, courtesy of her Landmine Quirk. Himiko manages to drink from a few soldiers, but the blood detonates. Curious came ready for those tricks, she says, and she came for answers.

The details she recites are precise. The Toga household's first girl, birthday the seventh of August, once known as bright and well-mannered, vanished once middle school ended, seventeen at present. Why abandon an ordinary life, Curious asks, promising the story will serve the Army. Bloodied, Himiko says she rather likes her, because Curious is also trying to make the world lovely.

As for the question about ordinary life, Himiko answers that this is what ordinary looks like for her.

Notes

Fifteen pages, the opening chapter of Volume 24, published April 22, 2019 in issue 21 of 2019 and adapted in Episode 109. Giran and Re-Destro appear on the cover, and Saito debuts.

The whole chapter takes place in Deika City. Landmine is the only Quirk featured. The Revival Celebration continues, as does the fight between Himiko Toga and Curious.

The title plays on an American gothic horror novel of nearly identical name, and the film adapted from it.
