Chapter 426

Nobody in the family believes anyone else needed to come, and they all say so. Natsuo and Fuyumi tell Shoto he could have stayed away, Rei tells the pair the same, and a heavily bandaged Enji says it of Rei, until Shoto cuts through the deflection by pointing out that duty is not what brought them. An officer explains the terms. Toya can talk, but only minutes per day, and his body is on a slow march toward the end. Sealed inside a life support unit, Toya opens his eyes, jokes that he has become a tourist attraction, and starts coughing hard.

Enji has come with news. He is finished as a hero, a decision he had already made for whenever the Final War ended, though standing unaided is now beyond him anyway. Endeavor, he says, burned away, and no flame he ever produced matched what Toya turned loose. Toya offers mock condolences and calls him a coward for playing nice once everything is over. Enji concedes the point, admits he watched Toya for years while wanting only to be watched in return, and insists that Hellflame still burns inside his son. He has replayed the video denouncing him every day since, and he intends to visit daily from now on so they can talk, however late that offer arrives.

The monitor climbs and the officer warns against further strain. Enji hands the remaining minutes to Rei, Natsuo, and Fuyumi, telling them to speak freely and hate him if they like, and both women say there is far more they need to say. Shoto asks one last question, what Toya's favorite food is. The silence stretches long enough that they assume he is spent, then he answers soba, which happens to be Shoto's answer too. Alone afterward, Toya thinks back on their fight and silently apologizes to his brother.

Outside, Natsuo tells Enji nothing has shifted, that he wants no part of him, and that he is marrying his girlfriend without a ceremony and without an introduction. Enji accepts it and apologizes. Fuyumi mentions leaving her teaching post and landing new work through a student's mother. Pressed on whether punishment has been enough, Enji commits to a lifetime of amends and to shielding his children from the fallout, calling that the reason he survived at all. Natsuo calls it hell, hears that it has been hell since the day they fought, and admits, awkwardly, that this is the first time his father has struck him as impressive. Shoto tells his parents he will be fine with his classmates beside him and that he intends to become the man he chooses to be. Untenmaru and the Flaming Sidekickers are waiting, and Rei shows Enji a text proving someone else is still watching: Hawks.

Hawks, meanwhile, cannot get Lady Nagant to walk out the door he opened for her. The world beyond frightens her and she fears being used again, so she will stay, eating on the public's dime, until she sees what society does with what Izuku showed everyone. Hawks calls that villainous. Elsewhere Gentle walks free once his contribution is formally recognized, reuniting with a tearful La Brava. Hawks then reaches Enji with his own news, that he now presides over the Hero Public Safety Commission, and contacts Yokumiru Mera to wonder aloud what changes next. At Central Hospital, a recovering Spinner wakes to a visitor at his door.

The Todoroki family visits Toya in a sealed life support unit, where he is dying slowly and limited to a few minutes of speech each day. Enji retires from hero work, largely because of the injuries Toya inflicted, and pledges to return every day for as long as he lives. Shoto's parting question reveals that the brothers share a favorite food, and Toya weeps and apologizes to him once the room empties.

Natsuo confirms he wants no further contact with his father and plans to marry without him present. Fuyumi has left teaching and found new work through a student's mother. The Hero Public Safety Commission's new President turns out to be Hawks, who has pardoned Lady Nagant, though she declines to leave custody. Gentle's contribution is formally recognized and he walks out to a tearful reunion with La Brava, while Spinner wakes at Central Hospital to an unseen guest.

The 426th chapter of Horikoshi's series runs 15 pages in the Epilogue arc, printed in issue 31 of 2024 on July 1 and collected in volume 42. Its cover assembles the whole Todoroki family: Natsuo, Fuyumi, Rei, Enji, and Shoto.

The title closes out the recurring "Hellish Todoroki Family" chapter thread. Anime coverage falls across most of episode 168 and a pair of pages carried into episode 169. Horikoshi's author comment jokes that Endeavor's arm appearing to regrow in the previous chapter was a trick of the reader's eyes.
