Chapter 87 (Vigilantes)

In the instant before the barrage lands, Iwao Oguro, fighting as The Ripper, runs his opponent's words and body language through Overclock and concludes the man fully intends to attack regardless of the blade. With the knife worthless to him, he lets the onslaught knock it loose in a way that looks accidental, and does the same with his mask so he can breathe, since the Quirk demands a steady supply of oxygen to his brain.

The Rapper keeps coming. Iwao slips the punches while continuing to study him, working out that Strongarm is built to deliver flurries at speed. He plays at being staggered so he can open distance and steal a breath, and as he rises he accepts that everything he prepared as The Ripper the knife fighter is useless. He resolves to fight as a street brawler instead.

Out on the streets of Osaka, a young Fat Gum helps three girls from a hero school who have lost their way on a school trip, pointing them in the right direction before moving on. They thank him and start off again, until one of them catches a whiff of her favorite thing in the world, the smell of a fight happening somewhere close. She is gone before her friends can stop her, bounding toward it.

Back at the Underground Masquerade, Iwao holds off a rush that never ends. His opponent wastes enormous motion, yet even Overclock cannot find an opening in it, which tells Iwao that the man and his Quirk were made for cages like this one. Seeing no reason to stay in the ring any longer, he lets a hit land and throws the fight. The beaten Ripper is carried off to the room where badly injured fighters are supposedly patched up, among them Drunk Lee and Master Beast. A member of the medical staff compliments his performance despite the loss and, as a reward for the effort, proposes an injection that will help him win next time. Elsewhere, Rumi Usagiyama, the girl who ditched her classmates, arrives at the illegal fights, eager to get in on the fun.

Iwao deliberately loses the match to reach the fighters' sick bay, and the staff there immediately offer him a performance-enhancing injection. More of Rumi Usagiyama's past comes to light: she attended a hero school, as yet unnamed, located in Hiroshima, and she reaches the Underground Masquerade under her own steam.

The eighty-seventh chapter of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes by Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court, seventeen pages published October 10, 2020, and collected in volume 11 during the Underground Masquerade arc.
