Dark-brown eyes, large and expressive, sit beneath a fall of black hair worn long and dead straight. Her chosen outfit is a strapless blue minidress kept in place by a duo of narrow gold belts, matched with black heels that strap around the ankle, drop earrings, and a finely worked necklace.

The series says almost nothing about what Emi is like on a normal day. One detail does slip through: paying attention to Jiraiya is so unlike her that the shift alone tips him off, which implies she is ordinarily indifferent to that sort of interest.

Emi's involvement in events begins with a visit to Shukuba Town, where she has gone to see friends. There Itachi Uchiha catches her in an illusion and uses her to occupy Jiraiya, buying himself a path toward Naruto Uzumaki. The scheme comes apart when Jiraiya registers that her sudden interest in him makes no sense; he dispels the genjutsu and rushes to Naruto's aid. Her given name carries the meaning "smile", and the game Naruto: The Broken Bond reveals that she has a sibling.
