Personality

Fugō is a bundle of nerves who cracks the moment things get hard. His will to live runs so deep that he will happily let others die if it keeps him breathing; held captive, he attempted to swap his costly wristwatch for the water an old woman held, growing irate when she turned him down. Even so, his love for his family runs deep, deep enough that he once weighed threatening the people who took them.

History

Fugō's troubles begin at work: a rival organisation was strangling his firm toward collapse just as kidnappers seized his wife and child. With no way to meet the ransom, he saw threatening the abductors with a chemical weapon as his sole recourse. He was aboard the Thunder Train when Ōga swept its riders into a labyrinth to stage lethal survival trials. In the opening test, where the platforms fell away, Batta convinced him he had little chance alone and got herself hired as his guard; he was among just fourteen who lived through it.

The rounds that followed kept exposing his instincts. Once Ōga tied each prisoner's survival to a candle, Fugō would not hand Batta his briefcase even though doing so would have steadied the lantern in his other hand, and he leaned on the people around him to pull through. In a chamber whose spiked ceiling ground downward, he elbowed past Shamo to grab a safe alcove and pushed Batta to kill another captive, though Boruto's group found a way to spare everyone. When he finally opened the briefcase he had guarded so jealously, it held nothing but a family photograph and a water canteen.

The deadliest game dealt each person a numbered card and required them to reach a gate inside two hours with cards totalling seven. Holding a two, Fugō was joined by Batta and her three, and he found her willingness to help strange given how she loathed the rich. When he stumbled and she grabbed the briefcase, its odd lightness gave him away; it sprang open and he confessed everything, upon which she seized his card and, as he pleaded, he was run through from behind. The deaths, though, were an illusion: Fugō lay frozen in suspended animation until Yatsume, secretly Ōga herself, broke free of the genjutsu and released the captives when Boruto refused to abandon her. Afterward Batta approached him again, offering a price cut in view of his family's hardship.
