Hanabi Hyuga is a kunoichi of Konohagakure and the designated heir of the Hyuga clan. Younger sister to Hinata, she was chosen over her sibling for her early talent, grew into a formidable Gentle Fist fighter and Byakugan wielder, and in time leads Team 15 as a demanding jonin sensei.
Hanabi bears the pale, wide eyes shared by every member of her clan, tinted faintly lilac in the anime, and she strongly favours her father in her features. Her hair, black in the manga and dark brown in the anime, shifts across her life. In Part I she keeps it long past a sleeveless blue v-neck worn over mesh armour, with blue shorts and sandals.
Part II sees it cropped into an asymmetrical bob framing her chin, paired with a tan vest and white wristbands, though for Pain's assault she dons a pale kimono with violet patterning, a red-orange obi and a flower hairclip. Two years after the war her hair grows well past her hips, tied low with a white ribbon and finished with pink-ribboned strands at the front above a flame-patterned kimono top and skirt. Later still she stands taller and slimmer, her chin-length bangs framing a knee-length ponytail over a yellow kimono blouse and long red skirt.
In the manga Hanabi stays lightly sketched, but the anime paints her as a quiet, courteous girl who nonetheless warms to others more readily than the shy Hinata once did, and with noticeably more confidence. As a small child she idolised her elder sister and ached at the harsh conditions Hinata endured, only to grow hardened herself once she grasped the Hyuga's unforgiving ways and her own destiny to lead them, briefly adopting Neji's old fatalism. Watching Hinata surpass every expectation restored much of her earlier cheer and earned Naruto her lasting respect.
Grown, she takes her duties as clan heir and jonin sensei with great seriousness and runs Team 15 as a strict, sometimes ruthless captain, pushing students like Namida hard and scolding recklessness, yet always striving to draw out their best and glad to spend time with them off duty. At home she is described as fashionable and extravagant, dotes openly on her niece Himawari and nephew Boruto while nudging them toward independence, takes comic pride in her cooking, and collects the Extreme: Shinobi Picture Scrolls cards with an expertise rivalling Boruto's own.
As the younger daughter of clan head Hiashi Hyuga, Hanabi displayed rare promise from a young age, sparring nearly on par with Hinata despite the gap in their years. When doubts grew over Hinata's progress, a duel was staged to settle the clan's future. Hinata, unwilling to strike her sister, faltered, and Hanabi seized the win, distressed at having hurt her. Judged the stronger prospect, Hanabi became the heir and took on Hiashi's punishing training regimen.
She carries the Byakugan, which her father rates nearly as potent as Neji's, and grows skilled in Gentle Fist and advanced Hyuga arts such as the Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven. Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, she is abducted by a puppet army serving Toneri Otsutsuki, who transplants her especially pure Byakugan into himself to awaken the Tenseigan. A rescue team recovers her, and Hinata restores her eyes.
In the New Era she balances her path as future clan head with leading Team 15, mentoring Sumire, Wasabi and Namida, and she remains close to Boruto and Himawari, once even wrangling with Hinata over whether the family should move back into the Hyuga estate.
