Komugi

A small pointed goatee sits beneath Komugi's habitually squinted eyes, and his black hair stands in spikes. His look is plain: a two-tone shirt, matching trousers, and the Leaf's forehead protector.

Cheer comes readily to him. Word that his squad had cleared the first round of the exams was enough to bring him to happy tears. That good nature sits alongside an inflated sense of his own ability, a trait he shares with the rest of his team.

In a fight he leans on modest taijutsu, trading blows with a Sand ninja the night before an exam until Fū's arrival broke it up, though he also took a kick to the face from Ajisai around then. He is hardy and swift enough to have been among the thirty to cross from Konoha to Suna in three days. During Part I, he and his team sign up for the Chūnin Exams, but Ibiki Morino's warning that a failure means no second attempt spooks him into withdrawing, which knocks his whole squad out.

Roughly two years on, the anime places him in a joint exam run by Konoha and Suna, seated in the first room as Shikamaru Nara lays out the written test. His team scrapes through by hitting the intended combined score and leaving the bonus untouched. A race to Suna thins the field to thirty teams, and his group makes the cut, only to meet Temari's second stage in the Demon Desert. When they corner the battered Ame kunoichi, Team Guy intervenes, Neji Hyūga arguing there are no alliances beyond one's own squad, and the numbers force Komugi's team to fall back.

Controversy cuts the exams short before the finals, and Gaara opts to leave promotions to each village's leader. In the end, Tsunade tells Komugi his showing fell short and he will have to wait another year.
