Kurotsuchi is a kunoichi of Iwagakure and granddaughter of the Third Tsuchikage, Ōnoki, with a bloodline reaching back to the First Tsuchikage. Bold, proud, and fiercely devoted to her village, she eventually inherits her grandfather's mantle as the Fourth Tsuchikage.
Kurotsuchi keeps her black hair short and has striking pink eyes, rendered black in the anime, their corners lifted by upswept lashes. Her Iwagakure outfit follows the village pattern: a red top with the right sleeve removed and a lapel over the right leg, a brown flak jacket, fishnet tights, a skirt, gloves, and standard sandals.
In later years she sets the forehead protector aside for a red dress left open along the lower front-right so it bares her right leg, sleeved only on the left. She crops the sides of her hair shorter as well and adds red polish to her nails.
Ordinarily calm and easygoing, Kurotsuchi burns with loyalty to Iwagakure, once favoring the killing of the Eight- and Nine-Tails' hosts over their protection simply to make her village stronger than Konoha and Kumo. She shares her grandfather's audacity, needling him about his aching back and hinting he ought to hand off to someone younger, though she hides a more childish, excitable streak of her own. Her confidence in her skills can tip into arrogance, another trait she traces to Ōnoki.
Once she becomes Tsuchikage she turns more serious, harsh toward failure and proud of the Kage title above all, with the prosperity of Iwagakure as her guiding priority. When the Earth Daimyō pushes her toward invading a neighbor, she complies with visible discomfort, convinced that peace cannot last forever, yet she holds her ground and stands down after the Seventh Hokage's appeal.
A capable kunoichi from the moment she guarded Ōnoki at the Five Kage Summit, Kurotsuchi commands Earth, Fire, and Water natures and blends the first two into Lava Release, congealing quicklime to trap her foes and later mastering the technique outright; she also fights with sword and fist and is reckoned the strongest genjutsu user among the five sitting Kage. At the summit she asked leave to face Sasuke Uchiha, sheltered under an earthen dome when the room caved in, and pressed her grandfather to eliminate Naruto and Killer B to blunt Madara's scheme.
Sent to reinforce Genbu, she trapped Kabuto Yakushi for questioning, only for him to slip free in his snake form. Across the Fourth Shinobi World War she served in the Second Division under her own father, unearthed and battled the White Zetsu Army, hounded the reincarnated Deidara, and poured quicklime onto the Ten-Tails as part of Shikaku's plan; a legend later held that she never flinched before a hundred thousand Zetsu.
Within a decade of the war she succeeded Ōnoki as Fourth Tsuchikage, joining the other Kage to rescue Naruto from Momoshiki and Kinshiki, whom she and Chōjūrō briefly restrained. Later she was captured by Kū during his Akuta uprising, learned that her own grandfather had set the plot in motion, and wept over Ōnoki's sacrifice once it ended. In Shikamaru Shinden she is forced by the Earth Daimyō to push for war on the Land of Flowers, a stance Shikamaru exposes before the daimyō backs down, and she thanks both him and Naruto for settling the crisis without bloodshed.
