Nan

Brown hair sits beneath a bandanna that Nan wears, with only two strands left loose to hang at the front of his face. His eyes are a dark shade. For clothing he keeps things plain, pairing a shirt with no sleeves alongside trousers and sandals.

The wellbeing of his village and everyone living in it drives Nan, and a raid by bandits hardened him into the conviction that no ninja could ever be trusted. That grudge pushed him toward vengeance: he was ready to see Menma dead even knowing the young man had no recollection of the acts held against him. His hostility toward shinobi only starts to fade once Naruto's group defends the settlement from the Shiin Clan, and afterward he is left wishing he had thanked Menma for shielding his home.

Nan rose to lead a small community in the Land of Sound. When Orochimaru seized control of the region, the village lost its military strength and became a target for bandits eager to reach a gold mine nearby. Nan tried to hold them off, though his efforts failed, and only a passing storm finally drove the raiders back.

During the mission to recover Menma's memories, Naruto arrived with Tenten, Neji, and Menma, only to be mistaken for the very bandits plaguing the settlement. Even once the ninja proved their intentions, Nan urged them to leave, dismissing his sister Ran's plea for help and insisting to the group that a good shinobi simply did not exist. Naruto and Menma refused to abandon the village and set about building its defenses. When Shiin was caught watching them and wounded Menma, Nan tended the injury and spotted a tattoo marking Menma as one of the raiders' clan. Neji explained the memory loss and the plan to hand Menma over once he recovered, and after Menma gave his life to save the village, Nan was left regretting that he had misjudged him.
