Rai Uchiha was a shinobi of the Uchiha clan during the Warring States Period and an early master of the forbidden Izanagi. His obsession with that eye technique made him the leader of a band of clansmen, until a rival turned the very same jutsu against him.
Rai was a young man with black hair falling to his shoulders and dark eyes. He wore the standard Uchiha mantle, its crest displayed across the back, over an X-shaped harness and a belt hung with several pouches, along with a larger pack behind him and a sword slung across his back. When his Mangekyō Sharingan awakened, its pattern took the shape of a black spiral coiling around the pupil.
Power consumed Rai. He grew fixated on the might Izanagi lent him, clinging to it even after overuse blinded his left eye, and he trumpeted the technique as proof that his clan could never be beaten. By Baru Uchiha's account he was fond of ordering others about. Convinced that only results counted in the shinobi world, he set his sights on ruling not just the Uchiha but the entire ninja world single-handed, an ambition that tipped him into outright megalomania.
Commanding a group of his kinsmen, Rai clearly held some talent for leadership, and he fought capably with a sword even after losing sight in one eye, striking hard enough to shatter the ground with a single swing. As an Uchiha he wielded the Sharingan, and from it he drew Izanagi, one of its most forbidden arts. His mastery of the technique ran so deep that he could push its reach beyond his own person to affect other people and even a whole battlefield. Early in life he awakened not only the Sharingan but the Mangekyō as well. When a trap wiped out his comrades during the clan wars, Rai reversed the outcome by sacrificing his left eye to Izanagi and cutting down the enemy, then declared the Uchiha invincible. His command lasted until Baru Uchiha challenged him and killed him by turning Izanagi against its own devotee.
