Rō

Rō cuts a bulky, boulder-round figure, and paired with his antiquated way of speaking he reads more like a samurai than a ninja. His brown hair sits short and spiky above sideburns, and his brown eyes rest low under heavy lids, thick brows, and a solid jaw. On assignment he covers his face with a monkey-themed mask and wears the ordinary uniform of a Leaf shinobi.

An old-fashioned formality colors Rō's speech, and he carries the steady discipline of a career Anbu. He proved his endurance early by lying motionless among corpses for days, and later withstood torture without breaking, still throwing himself into the fight to shield his squad leader. In quieter times he and his colleague Hinoko read Shikamaru well, quick to sense when a summons means real trouble.

Rō's defining ability traces back to a genin mission gone catastrophically wrong. His large unit was ambushed and wiped out, and he alone survived by burrowing under his dead comrades and clamping down on his chakra for days, feigning death. In that ordeal he discovered he could reshape how his chakra signature is perceived, a knack that earned him a place in the Anbu. The resulting Chakra Disguise lets him rewrite what sensors detect, scrubbing a presence away entirely or mimicking someone else's signature so an enemy is fooled, as when he made a hidden rat register as something worth guarding against. He is candid that the trick only deceives and never alters the true amount of chakra a target holds. In a straight fight he leans on taijutsu and raw strength, enough to briefly pin the powerful Chōji Akimichi, and as an elite operative he handles a tantō with the kenjutsu his rank implies.

In the years after the war his talents served Shikamaru repeatedly. When Shikamaru was sent into the Land of Silence to recover missing ninja, Sai among them, and to remove its ruler Gengo, the Sixth Hokage assigned Rō and Hinoko to back him up. The squad was captured and tortured by Gengo's Enlightened Ones, and Gengo nearly locked them in a mind-warping genjutsu before Temari arrived with Leaf and Sand reinforcements to shatter his grip. Battered as he was, Rō restrained the brainwashed fighters and, during the leader's duel in the dark, masked Shikamaru's chakra so the rogue could not track him. Later, with Shikamaru now advising the Seventh Hokage, Rō and Hinoko were sent to slip into Iwagakure and learn why its Tsuchikage was demanding Konoha's classified intelligence. They uncovered preparations to invade the Land of Flowers on the Land of Earth daimyō's orders, a move that would violate the Shinobi Union, and they kept feeding Shikamaru updates until he defused the crisis through diplomacy. He thanked the pair afterward, and they offered their help whenever he might need it again.
